Job Title: Med Lab Tech II
Job Specialty: Generalist in all lab areas
Job Duration: 12 months
Shift: 7 on 7 off, 3rd shift
Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
Experience: Previous experience with Blood Bank is essential
License: Not specified
Certifications: ASCP or NCA registered
Must-Have: Blood Bank experience, familiarity with Cerner, Roche Cobas 6000, Sysmex-WAM, Roche middleware, Instrument Manager
Job Description:
- Perform laboratory analyses and quality testing independently, adhering to well-defined criteria.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information, collaborating effectively with patients, the public, and healthcare professionals.
- Ensure testing procedures, quality control, and proficiency testing meet the laboratory's standards for quality, accuracy, timeliness, appropriateness, and usefulness.
- Verify specimen integrity, set priorities, evaluate and interpret data, and take appropriate actions per policy.
- Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new methods, policy/procedure manual upkeep, and CAP inspections.
- Operate lab instruments, perform instrument quality control, document results, and perform preventive maintenance.
- Troubleshoot instrument problems, understand the theory of instrument operations, and seek help when necessary.
- Use Cerner/STAR for ordering, receiving, or canceling tests and reviewing/verifying results.
- Review pending lists and follow up on pending tests, ensuring proper documentation and maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Communicate information accurately, clearly, and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, laboratory staff, and external departments.
- Ensure laboratory and hospital safety by following policies/procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Complete mandatory education and participate in available continuing education programs.
- Meet department Performance Improvement Goals and perform additional job duties and responsibilities as required.
Skills:
- Proficient in operating laboratory instrumentation.
- Capable of performing patient phlebotomy and making well-informed decisions under stressful conditions.
- Competent in using standard office equipment such as telephones, fax machines, and computer terminals.
- Able to work well in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment, which may be interruptive and stressful.
- Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, and may require lifting items up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue, with possible exposure to infectious materials, toxic substances, and communicable diseases common to a laboratory environment.
Languages: Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
