DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Los Angeles LGBT Center's Department of Health Services is one of the nation's largest and most experienced providers of LGBTQ-specialized primary care and related services, Our mission to help LGBTQ people lead healthier, happier lives is supported by our comprehensive array of client-centered services including primary care, mental health, psychiatry, sexual health, pharmacy, case management, nutrition, clinical research, housing services and a food pantry. The Center is one of a handful of Federally Qualified Health Centers in the nation specializing in serving LGBTQ people.

JOB SUMMARY: The LGBT individuals are more likely to struggle with substance use issues and often face difficulties finding culturally competent and harm reductive recovery services. The Medical Director of Addiction Medicine and Pain Management will work with Center leadership to guide the agency's overall approach to substance use and recovery within the LGBT community and will direct the Center's medical efforts to assess, diagnose and treat substance use disorders in patients and clients seeking services. This includes serving as medical director of the Center's Substance Use and Recovery (SURS) program, expanding the provision of medication assisted therapy, creating policies and procedures to guide substance use assessment and treatment, and developing innovative strategies for outreach and harm reduction. Substance abuse disorders originate from inadequate efforts to manage psychic trauma and physical pain, often leading individuals to "self-medicate." Given this relationship, the Medical Director will also lead the clinic's approach to chronic pain management, relying on evidence-based interventions and provided through a holistic framework. This will include creating policies and procedures to guide clinical practice regarding pain management and concurrent controlled substance use in the clinic, consulting with other medical and psychiatric providers regarding individual cases, and providing education and training to health services clinical staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Direct all clinic and community-based efforts to provide medication assisted therapy (MAT) including establishing policies and procedures based on evidence-based practices and rooted in harm reductive frameworks, providing oversight of the naloxone distribution process, and training medical providers and clinical staff.
Explore and create innovative strategies for substance use outreach, assessment and immediate referral to harm reductive services, including establishing partnerships other community agencies and service providers to ensure timely linkage to LGBT competent care.
Partner with all Center departments and community sites regarding the development and implementation of substance use programming and clinical services.
Direct and oversee chiropractic and acupuncture services at the Center including supervising the chiropractic and acupuncture managers; creating policies and procedures regarding the role of integrative medicine in pain management and addiction medicine, and the processes and indications for chiropractic and acupuncture referrals from psychiatry and primary care; and facilitating and monitoring growth of the chiropractic and acupuncture clinical programs within the Center.
Collaborate with MarCom to establish a social media presence and communicate with staff, patients and community members about issues pertinent to substance abuse and recovery.
Provide clinical consultation for patients presenting with complex substance use or pain related needs.
Create clinic policies and procedures to establish practice guidelines for the management of chronic pain, including implementation of holistic evidence-based strategies and appropriate use of controlled substances.
Lead bimonthly meetings with MAT/SURS providers, case workers, and therapists about recent studies and difficult cases.
Attend bimonthly county-wide meeting, MAT learning Collaborative for updated information about community specific drug supply.
Attend MDCC and PCRC meetings when cases involve substance use or addiction issues.
Maintains sufficient continuing medical education as required by the individual's national professional board. In particular, stays up to date on national guidelines, research initiatives and cutting edge strategies to address addiction and pain control.
Provide onboarding training to new providers and ongoing quarterly education to current providers and clinical staff regarding new updates and best practices substance use and pain management.
Participates in the after-hours call pool.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
A passion for the Center's work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
Current specialty certification in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians or Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and active license to practice with medicine without restrictions by the California Medical Board.
Current certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or an equivalent body as required by licensure and licensed to practice as a 103NP or 104NP Nurse Practitioner by the California Board of Nursing.
Board certified in Addiction Medicine or 5 years-experience providing direct patient care to patients experiencing addiction and/or chronic pain.
Active unrestricted DEA license.
Documentation of completion of 8 hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders in the last 24 months.
Strong commitment to providing care within a trauma-informed, sex-and-body positive, and harm reductive framework.
Understanding of the intersectional issues impacting LGBTQ people including the ways that racism, sexism, transphobia and income inequality impacts health access and outcomes.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational, detail and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
