The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist 2.
WORK SCHEDULE
40 hours per week
First Shift

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.
Will be considered essential staff and therefore will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
May be required to work some weekends and holidays
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory OR equivalent education/experience AND Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division AND Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
MLS2 provides high level support for the performance of high complexity procedures within the molecular microbiology section of the clinical laboratory. MLS2 provides direction with designated authority to Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 (MLS1) and participates in development and evaluation of new procedures. MLS2 performs administrative duties such as reviews cases and provide support and assistance to the Molecular Microbiology Lead in overseeing the Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Instrument Maintenance, Procedures, Competency Assessment, Training and Scheduling of MLS1 staff and MLS students. The MLS2 assumes responsibility for a section in the absence of a Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead. MLS2 validates new protocols, documents validation and writes protocols.
MLS 2 performs other laboratory duties as follows:
A MLS 2 performs various PCR tests for the identification of bacteria, yeast and parasite in the Molecular Diagnostic Division per laboratory protocols.
The MLS 2 rotates and maintains competency in all sections where they have been trained.
MLS 2 does DNA extraction by manual methods, sets up PCR reactions, real-time PCR reactions and DNA sequencing reactions. The MLS 2 understands and operates a variety of molecular laboratory equipments (Qiacube and EZ2 DNA extractor, Qiagility liquid handler, ZAG DNA analyzer, 3130xl DNA sequencer, Illumina DNA sequencer, Biomek Nxp and 4000, Hamilton Star) and is able to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
MLS 2 exhibits a working knowledge of the laboratory information system software and can teach it to others. MLS 2 is able to use Molecular database (mmdb) to enter data, print worksheets, analyze DNA sequences and prepare case reports. MLS 2 is able to use DNA analyzing softwares such as BLAST, BLAST2Tree and ClustalW.
MLS 2 understands quality control requirements and follows policies to validate results. The MLS 2 is able to work independently to manage average workloads and knows when to request assistance in case of heavier workloads.
MLS 2 performs work accurately and precisely and recognizes, corrects and documents errors when they occur. The MLS 2 interacts with health care providers in a professional manner. The MLS 2 knows what results are critical or reportable and follows the policies and procedures for reporting them to appropriate medical staff, epidemiology or Public Health Laboratory. The MLS 2 assists with the evaluation of new tests/equipment and research projects as required.
MLS 2 instructs new employees, medical laboratory students, medical students, residents and fellows in routine procedures and is patient and tolerant with them. The MLS 2 continues education and maintains certification by attending Lab Medicine seminars, in services, staff meetings and/or by reading scientific journals and participating in CAP proficiency surveys.
MLS 2 assists the lead in teaching/training, organize and schedule in-service of new employees, medical laboratory scientist students, post-doctoral fellows and residents within the section and provide feedback on performance.
MLS 2 performs inventory in assigned areas, unpacks, labels and puts away supplies taking care to rotate stock as needed. The MLS 2 lets the lead know well in advance when any item is getting low, helps organize the storage and proper labeling of chemicals and verifies that the records are current and complete. The MLS 2 assists the lead in ordering supplies so supplies arrive on time and to the correct location.
MLS 2 develops bench assignments for a shift or section.
MLS 2 communicates necessary/appropriate information to all MLS, leads and the manager.
MLS 2 is aware of the needs of co-workers and workload issues and helps others without being asked.
MLS 2 performs related duties as required.
