Duties Description As a Medical Specialist 3, you would serve as chief of service; manage, direct, and administer medical services for an assigned facility(s), unit(s), or program(s); develop, implement, and revise clinical policies and procedures; and directly supervise Medical Specialists, physicians, and/or other medical providers.
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet the following requirements:
Transfer Opportunity -
Permanent New York State employee currently serving in this title, or in comparable title, and eligible for Section 70.1 transfer;
OR
Promotional Opportunity -
Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State;
AND
Certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in your specialty
AND
One (1) year of permanent service as Medical Specialist 2;
AND
Eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
OR
Open Competitive:
Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State;
AND
Certification by the appropriate Medical Specialty Board;
AND
One (1) year of post-board certification experience in a medical specialty;
AND
Eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
OR
Provisional Opportunity -
Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State;
AND
Certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in your specialty.
AND
One year of post-certification experience in your medical specialty.
If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.

If you are appointed and you lose the ability to bill through Medicare and Medicaid, you may be terminated from your employment.
3. License and Certification: Loss of license or limited permit to practice medicine in New York State or board certification, if required, may result in removal from your position.
Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
