Job Summary:
As a Metallurgical Engineer at Zinc Resources, you will utilize your expertise in metallurgy to extract, process, and refine Electric Arc Furnace to produce Waelz Zinc Oxide (WZO) and Waelz Iron Products (WIP). The Engineer will oversee the metallurgical process, ensuring our operations' efficiency, quality, and safety.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support for processing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust to increase throughput, improve quality/process capability, reduce costs, and enhance safety.
- Lead investigations into continual quality and productivity improvements.
- Troubleshoot and guide plant operations in day-to-day targets and performance.
- Support Supervisors in daily activities, including on-call responses to restore flow and developing/implementing countermeasures to prevent problem reoccurrences, such as equipment malfunctions or new product setup.
- Apply engineering principles and company policies and procedures, analyze data or situations, and exercise judgment to recommend solutions to solve problems.
- Participate across the business to identify and share company-wide best practices and advise the priorities for business excellence.
- Utilize appropriate tools/methodology to plan resources and ensure timely completion.
- Demonstrate a positive, upbeat attitude and energy level towards teammates, peers, and customers.
- Must be able to perform duties safely.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Education/Experience Qualifications:
- A minimum Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering is required, with a Master's degree being a plus.
- 1 - 5 years' experience/internship in a Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required:
- Familiarity with carbo-thermal, metallurgical redox reactions, Boudouard Reaction, and effect on calcium ions to silicon ions ratio in High-Temperature Metal Recovery preferred.
- Solid understanding of how to use Excel for calculations and data analysis.
- Ability to learn rapidly, follow directions, and acquire acceptable work habits such as punctuality, skill, neatness, and dependability.
- Ability to read and interpret gauges/dials and make competent decisions related to processing equipment.
- Communicate effectively in English and read, understand, and convey work instructions and assignments.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently, with a strong self-motivated attitude.
- Proactive approach with a focus on innovation and creativity in problem-solving.
- Flexibility in availability, including the ability to work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to accommodate schedules, workload demands, and plant operations.
Physical requirements:
- Ability to participate in fieldwork as necessary to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as a respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, ear protection, etc., for long periods.
- Possess the ability to pass a lung function test for respirator use, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
- Capable of climbing stairs to 100 ft. and working at this height, as well as bending, stooping, climbing, and reaching around all equipment areas.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to use hand tools such as grease guns, shovels, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.
- Work in areas where noise levels are up to 90 dbs.
- Will work in varied environments (in all weather conditions, heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and/or dusty conditions).
- Exposure to raw materials and various chemicals, solvents, and lubricants.
