PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The High School Migrant Counselor is responsible to the campus Principal and the Coordinator of Migrant Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification
A Master's degree in guidance and counseling
Valid Texas counseling certificate
Special Knowledge
Strong familiarization with Migrant Education rules and regulations
Familiarization with the Seven Areas of Focus for Migrant Education
Ability to communicate with individual teachers, students and staff
Ability to work with groups of students or teachers
Experience
Three years teaching experience required

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Work with administrators, teachers and other counselors for effective dissemination of information to migrant students.
Coordinate the efforts of Migrant Education in serving all students.
Coordinate the efforts of Migrant Education in attending staff collaborative meetings.
Assist migrant students in making career choices by checking and following Career Pathways.
Identify students who may benefit by enrolling in Edgenuity courses and Credit By Exam courses.
Work with administrators, counselors and teachers to provide orientation to students relating to academic offerings and recommendation of courses through GEMS checklist.
Continue contact with former migrant students in order to improve services for migrant students.
Work with "feeder" schools to explain migrant programs.
Coordinate the completion of the migrant credit accrual forms of the migrant students at the end of each semester within five days.
Review withdrawal grades and recommended schedule for every migrant student within three days.
Consolidate partial grades for credit accumulation.
Provide individual counseling on a need basis for all migrant students.
Conduct presentations to help migrant students deal with special needs and concerns, to disseminate pertinent migrant program information, to give an update of special course availability for migrants, and provide social awareness through counseling activities.
Assist with the recruitment and identification of migrant students according to program guidelines.
Assist with updating rosters of the changing status of migrant students.
Attend parent advisory council meeting and provide parents with information on topics that maybe relevant to their needs. Inform parents of policies that effect on migrant students.
Assist other special program staff with the implementation of instructional programs designed to help students meet the states academic performance standards.
Assist the principal in closing the achievement gap of migrant students.
Assess tutoring needs and determine tutorial placement for all migrant students.
Assist migrant students by providing information on all of the special programs designed to help migrant students atthe post-secondary level.
Coordinate RIF book distributions for all migrant students and complete RIF reports in a timely manner.
Assist with registration of PSAT, SAT, ACT, PLAN, THEA, and Quick THEA testing for all migrant students.
Assist all migrant students in completing the FAFSA and scholarship applications.
Ensure that all migrant students take the SAT or ACT and the THEA.
Conduct orientations to parents on the graduation plans and course requirements for higher education opportunities.
Conduct orientations to migrant students regarding graduation plans.
Coordinate with Financial Aid Officer to conduct parent presentations on financial aid requirements and the college application process.
Assist with the teaching of the school developmental guidance curriculum to migrant students.
Help teachers incorporate guidance-related information into existing curriculum.
Provide guidance to individuals and groups of migrant students to develop educational plans and career awareness.
Counsel individuals and small groups about their concerns.
Consult migrant parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant people to enhance their work with migrant students.
Work with school personnel and school district residents to obtain resources for migrant students.
Use an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services.
May assist with the overall goals of the schools testing program as it relates to migrant students.
Assist in the planning of school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet the needs of migrant students.
Assist with the development and coordination of guidance program and make changes based on findings.
Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documents required by the Migrant Program.
Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule and board policy in guidance and counseling area.
Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, students and parents.
Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others.
Perform other related duties as assigned
