  • Position Summary

  • As an Internet2 NetDevOps Packet Architect / Principal Engineer you will provide guidance on the strategic direction of Internet2's packet network and related software development lifecycle; you will also be a key outward-facing asset to the community. You will focus on delivering new services, optimizing our existing services, and ensuring Internet2 remains on the cutting edge of technology development. You will work cross-functionally with management, business development, security, and software to create holistic designs, specifications, and budgets.

  • Educational Requirements (minimum and preferred)

    Education Level and Degree Program/Relevant Majors: BS Computer Science or equivalent experience

    Qualifications and Skills:
    • Experience with complex IT deployments. 5 years in a senior engineering role guiding implementations with complex systems, software, and network deployment.
    • 3 years working in a metrics-driven 24x7x365 operations environment.
    • Fundamental understanding of IP networking and implementing applications using IP protocols
    • Experience with Internet ecosystems, including some of the following: open exchanges, cloud/peering, colocation, or transport infrastructure; knowledge or experience with physical connectivity at all layers.
    • Familiarity with facility components, including: DC cabling, power distribution, cross-connects, long-haul fiber, etc.
    • Deep experience with IP networking and implementing applications using IP protocols and modern packet transport equipment.
    • Travel 20-30% required, some international.
    • Preferred overlap with multiple areas.

    Preferred Experience:
    • 10 years of experience in multi-site campus, ISP, WAN, and/or carrier networks.
    • Experience with global backbone architectures.
    • Network automation familiarity (such as NSO).
    • Experience presenting to large groups as a technical authority.
    • Familiarity with route policy; traffic analysis and troubleshooting skills, specifically applied to BGP
    • Experience building networks with routing protocols such as ISIS, OSPF, and SR-MPLS; experience with Cisco NCS/ASR/8200 platforms (IOS-XR) and Juniper EX/MX platforms.
    • Experience with Ciena 6500 Flex-Grid Systems and Waveserver Platforms.
    • Deep experience with optical transmission systems, ROADMs, etc.
    • Deep experience with research computing applications and/or networking, including extensibility into the cloud.
    • Deep experience with cloud providers, including traditional PNI-based peerings, public exchanges, commodity ISPs.
    • Overlap with multiple areas.


  • Internal and External Relationships


  • The Net Dev Ops Packet architect is responsible for guiding and planning the strategic development for the packet portion of the network elements including technology, hardware, protocols, and supporting software stacks:
    • Provide written specifications, planning documents, and supporting content (project plans, budgets, BOMs, etc) to guide decision making and budgeting; brief management team and ELT as needed.
    • Work closely with Peering Architect, Optical Architect (future), Senior Researcher, Transport Engineers, and Business Unit to forecast and adapt the Internet2 network to new services and traffic demands.
    • Remain abreast with new technology developments in the packet-related technologies, including both incumbent and potential vendors. Regularly brief entire team on developments and/or coordinate vendor briefings.
    • Manage relationships with incumbent hardware and software vendors related to packet platform. Support build-test, deployment, and ops teams in their resolution of identified problems with said vendors.
    • Provide support and technical expertise to other platform architects, including cloud/interconnect, senior researcher, and optical.
    • Recommend and oversee the development of laboratory resources to test new technologies, test network changes, and train engineers.
    • Work closely between the Business Unit and Software Team to help prioritize software development and ensure the quality of software production to enable both operational as well as customer-facing objectives.

    Community engagement (international, domestic, industry).
    • Maintain relationships with peers at international networks, regional networks, and campuses.
    • Proactively travel to major meetings (I2 spring and fall, REN Meetings, TNC, APAN, NANOG ).
    • Maintain relationships with peers at all major vendors (fiber and equipment) by meeting regularly.
    • Ensure technology updates are organized by Architects.
    • Actively guide TAC and working group discussions.
    • Participate in community technical discussions and contribute to community knowledge by either traveling to community meetings and/or participating in Webinars.
    • Participate in community development of Internet standards, for example, vendor/community working groups, IETF meetings.
    • Present at meetings on network-related initiatives.

    Project management. Deliverable QA/QC. Design review. Problem solving.
    • Engage in PMO-developed project management processes and ensure documentation and reporting are in accordance with established norms - including document storage
    • Ensure delivered services meet the requirements of original charters and that such services are made fully operational and NOC monitored. (QA/QC)
    • Provide problem-solving for any issues impacting project schedules and deliverables.

    Support other teams within the planning, architecture, and engineering verticals (build-test, break-fix); Support GlobalNOC break-fix team (chiefly through mentoring and support)

  • Scope of the Job

  • As a full-time employee, you will be eligible to participate in Internet2's employee benefits program effective on your start date in accordance with the terms and conditions of each plan. The salary range for this position is $130,000-$140,000 annually.
