The ideal SCN R&E Network Engineer will have a proven track record of technical leadership and success in designing, evaluating, and implementing backbone and last-mile networks for residential, small business, multi-dwelling units, and others, from conception to resolution. Our Network Engineers must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of network engineering, concepts, and best practices, with operational experience in supporting a medium to large-scale service provider (SP) network. As a technical leader, Network Engineers manage diverse stakeholder relationships (with both internal members and external vendors) as SCN continues developing new services and delivering cutting-edge technologies to our members. An interest in working with new technologies and pushing the envelope on existing technology is a must.

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being stationary and moving between office spaces.
  • Position requires the use of computer (desktop and/or laptop, keyboard, mouse).
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and use a diversity of technologies to communicate with the broader team.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or related field AND five years' of related experience, which includes three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Essential Duties

On the job, SCN Network Engineers perform the following primary job duties:
  • Works closely with members of the Sun Corridor team and strategic partners to identify needs, design technology solutions to address those needs, and deliver projects utilizing a mix of different manufacturer and developer products, while remaining conscious of the financial constraints of publicly funded institutions of varying sizes.
  • Apply strong hands-on skills with essential infrastructure components, including Routers, Switches, Firewalls, Application servers, and copper and fiber optic networking mediums and devices.
  • Apply strong hands-on skills in essential infrastructure management protocols, including iBGP, eBGP, OSPF, OSPFv3, IPv6, MPLS, and Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) connectivity types.
  • Identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving technical network problems and unintended consequences of technology solutions that might compromise the integrity of SCN deployed technologies in the last mile, aggregation, backbone, and core layers.
  • Perform big data analysis and visualization to provide new business insights to improve the customer experience.
  • Participate in the planning, testing, and integration phases of various projects to upgrade, redesign, and integrate new and existing services.
  • Utilize various software tools to proactively identify, investigate, and resolve anomalies with various key performance indicators (KPIs), log messages, data flows, and packets.
  • Work closely with NOC and technical team regarding site deployments, performance, and optimization.
  • Adaptability in rapidly acquiring an understanding of emerging infrastructure technologies as new solutions become available.
  • Applying strong and professional communication skills to interact with and relate to non-technical users, highly technical users, and business administrators from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Culturally cognizant and aware of, and able to interact with, the variety of Tribal, minority, unserved, and underserved communities that SCN is/will be supporting.
