Position Information

This is a Department Promotional Examination and is open to eligible employees of the Kern County Sheriff's Office who have successfully completed their initial probationary period and received an overall rating of standard or better on the last employee performance report.

Examination Schedule:
Appraisal (100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of evaluating the applicant's training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position. Appraisal can be based on any of the following: investigation, oral examination and/or review of application.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science or management information systems, AND four (4) years of experience in the utilization of networking principles and techniques which includes, systems analysis and design, systems support, management and/or coordination of an integrated system of local area network's (LAN's) and wide area network's (WAN's) for a department or organization.
OR
Completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university with course work in computer science or management information systems AND six (6) years experience in the utilization of networking principles and techniques including systems analysis and design, systems support, management and/or coordination of an integrated system of local area network's (LAN's) and wide area network's (WAN's) for a department or organization.
OR
Completion of an accredited technical or vocational training program in computer science, computer office automation technology, computer systems technology or a closely related field AND six (6) years of experience in the utilization of networking principles and techniques which includes systems analysis and design, systems support, management and/or coordination of an integrated system of local area networks (LAN's) and wide area networks (WAN's) for a department or organization.
OR
Two (2) years of experience as a Local Area Network Systems Administrator in the Kern County classification system.
OR
Eight (8) years of experience in the utilization of networking principles and techniques which includes systems analysis and design, systems support, management and/or coordination of an integrated system of local area networks (LAN's) and wide area networks (WAN's) for a department or organization.
Experience must include work with network operating systems, routers, Web Servers, Firewalls, OSI Model, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, DHCP, NAT and Gateways. Experience with UNIX is desirable. Possession of vendor specific certification, such as Novell Certified Netware Engineer (CNE) or Microsoft (MCSE) Certificate is desirable.
Qualifying experience must have been within the last eight (8) years.
Additional Requirements:
A valid California Class "C" Driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

This position works in various departments throughout Kern County.
This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made to the Kern County Sheriff's Office. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
