In this high-impact role, the successful applicant will function in a senior engineering role at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) within the Q-18 Advanced System Development group on the Nuclear Safety & Security engineering team. The Nuclear Safety and Security team is responsible for conducting thorough and comprehensive safety and security design development and evaluations of new US nuclear weapon systems to ensure compliance with government requirements, standards and policies.

Some of the tasks required in this role include:
  • Support safety and security programmatic tasking for new systems by participating in Working Groups and Product Realization Teams (PRTs) to provide technical expertise
  • Apply risk analysis methodologies to analyze systems (Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Systems Theoretic Process Analysis, etc.)
  • Support the development, refinement, and maintenance of LANL nuclear weapon safety and security policy and documentation
  • Represent Los Alamos National Laboratory by serving on multi-laboratory and international weapon safety groups
  • Recommend future safety and security architectures and designs in collaboration with stakeholders
  • Consult with stakeholders during the design phase and develop weapon program and component-specific safety assessment reports
  • Maintain and edit the Nuclear Weapon Safety Design Guide through collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs)


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300):
  • Advanced knowledge of safety design themes and principles.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment methodologies such as root-cause, consequence, event tree, and hazard analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing standards and procedures and guides their application to projects and programs.
  • Skilled in identifying, promoting, and developing new technical capabilities within the organization.
  • Advanced technical writing skills, with experience as a primary author for technical documents such as engineering reports, safety design guides, incident analyses, lessons learned reports, and intellectual property development.

Education/Experience : Position requires a master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Minimum Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4 ($150,300 - $260,800):
  • Proven ability to develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques, and approaches to address specialized problems.
  • Experienced in developing and implementing plans for new and significant project development opportunities.
  • Contributed to large-scale technical projects addressing national or international challenges.; sets technical approaches and determines appropriate course of action.
  • Strong background in technical leadership, including leading technical teams and making high-level project decisions.
  • Deep understanding of technical concepts and tools, with the ability to set and uphold technical standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders to drive business outcomes.
  • Experience influencing strategies and directions at different levels of the organization.
  • Ability to provide actionable recommendations that guide the successful completion of major programs.
  • Recognized as a technical resource and mentor to employees across the organization.

Education/Experience : Position requires a master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of multi-laboratory and international safety design philosophies.
  • Experience with aerosolized dispersal mechanisms and associated safety considerations.
  • Expertise in inadvertent nuclear detonation scenarios and mitigation strategies.
  • In-depth understanding of chemical, criticality, and explosive safety principles.
  • Knowledge of accident development, progression, and associated risk analysis.
  • Familiarity with LANL safety design objectives.
  • Understanding of nuclear weapon design and assessment quality requirements.
  • Experience with nuclear weapon safety processes and protocols.
  • Working knowledge of safety-related Department of Defense (DoD) documents, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Standards.
  • Strong foundation in scientific methodology and analytical approaches.
  • Experience in systems engineering; ASEP, CSEP, or ESEP certification preferred.
  • Prior involvement in Phase X and 6.X lifecycle activities.
  • Experience with PRT collaboration.
  • Proficiency with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methodologies.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
