What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Packaging Specialist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

A Hazardous/Nuclear Material Packaging Specialist/Driver is a position in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Logistics - Packaging and Transportation (LOG-PT) group. As a team member of the Hazardous Materials Shipping Team, you will support LANL programs with shipment and delivery of hazardous materials received at the SM-30 Distribution Center.

Packaging Specialist 1 ($64,700 - $101,400)

The selected candidate will be primarily responsible for: ensuring incoming shipments are compliant; segregating and transporting incoming shipments of hazardous materials in accordance with DOT, FMCSR and DOE orders; completing documents required under 49CFR for transportation; have the ability and training to tie down, and block and brace material; the ability to operate all fork lifts of every size; the ability to obtain all the requirements to become an authorized shipper; have the ability to follow policies and procedures without compromising safety and security. This individual will also need to be familiar with handling classified material.

In addition to above, the selected candidate will also learn how to: determine/classify hazardous material shipments ensuring they are compliant with Department of Energy Orders, Department of Transportation regulations, and/or International Civil Aviation Organization regulations; segregate shipments of hazardous materials in accordance with DOT, FMCSR and DOE orders; operate a forklift; have the ability to obtain all the requirements to become an authorized shipper; have the ability to follow policies and procedures without compromising safety and security.

Packaging Specialist 2 ($71,200 - $112,900)

In addition to what was outlined above, at this level, you will be a POC for incoming shipment deliveries of hazardous materials, and expected to have demonstrated knowledge and experience with 49CFR and FMCSR. You will also be responsible for document preparation and package evaluations; act as a liaison between multiple organizations; mentor junior staff; provide guidance of policies concerning hazardous material handling; and provide assistance to management regarding hazardous materials issues. Your work will be accomplished without considerable direction.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experienced in computer-based business systems and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to obtain hazardous Authorized Shipper by ground certification
  • Understanding of hazardous materials packaging and transportation
  • Understanding of federal, state and local hazardous materials standards and regulations
  • Knowledge of tie-down procedures
  • Basic knowledge of packaging requirements for hazardous materials
  • Ability to obtain a Class B (or Class A) Commercial Driver's License (Ability to obtain Class A) with hazardous materials endorsement
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance
  • Working knowledge of computer systems

Additional Job Requirements for Packaging Specialist 2:
  • Experience with document preparation and package evaluations
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience of technical and/or operational work in a shipping organization that handles all hazardous class and non-hazardous shipping and receiving
  • Working knowledge of Federal regulations for hazardous materials, including 10CFR
  • Current or previous Department of Transportation Hazardous (HMPT) and Basic Radioactive Material Shipping Training
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience of technical and/or operational work in a shipping organization that handles all hazardous class and non-hazardous shipping and receiving
  • Knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to hazardous and non-hazardous shipping including 49 CFR, IATA, IMDG and DOE
  • Working knowledge of authorization requirements for various hazardous material packaging
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective customer relationships with every level of personnel, including management and Federal oversight
  • Experience with developing shipping policy in collaboration with other shipping organizations to ensure compliant hazardous materials shipping, packaging, and handling
  • Thorough knowledge of integrated safety and security programs
  • Working knowledge of facility processes and operations
  • Experience with tie-down processes for a variety of materials, per FMCSR

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience or knowledge with Traffic/Shipping operations within a D.O.E/NNSA contractors' facilities
  • Knowledge of LANL programs, sites, and facilities
  • Working knowledge of facility processes and operations
  • Working knowledge of DOE orders, specifically those that govern transportation and information security
  • Familiarity with requirements for various hazardous packaging
  • Current site-specific training of respective sites within LANL
  • Familiar with Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) requirements
  • Experience with materials management policies and procedures.
  • Active Q clearance
  • Current CDL with hazardous materials endorsement

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associates Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
