Murdoch is currently recruiting for a Nurse Consultant II located in the Nursing Services. The primary purpose of the Nursing Services Department is to assure nursing services are provided at a 407 bed ICF/IID Center for all diagnostic, respite, emergency, and regular admissions. Nursing evaluates, plans, coordinates, implements, and reviews total nursing care delivery while assuring compliance with established policies, standards, ICF/IID regulations, the Nursing Practice Act, and legal aspects of nursing practice.

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Nursing Services in assuring compliance with the Nursing Practice Act, ICF/IID standards, OSHA regulations and mandated Department of Health and Human Services policies, through the development of educational materials, training curriculums and instructional sessions. Policies and standards are developed to assure delivery of safe, competent nursing care to people who have severe/profound intellectual disabilities and varying acute/chronic medical disorders. Establishes new/revised clinical procedures based on changing technology and acute medical needs, provides direct observation of clinical services and professional supervision of licensed nurses across the campus on a regular basis. This nurse can serve as Acting Director of Nursing in the absence of the DON with responsibility for the daily operations of the Nursing Services Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* CPR Faculty Member, Maintain CPR Database - Coordinates/provides BCLS (CPR) training for licensed and non-licensed staff. Coordinates/provides Standard First Aid training for licensed and non-licensed staff.

* Bi-Annuals & Med Pass Observations - Assists/develops policies and procedures to assure compliance with the Nursing Practice Act and Department of Health and Human Services/ICF regulations. Coordinates/Assists with planning/scheduling of bi-annual credentials for all nurses on campus.

Nurse Orientation (Permanent & Agency)

* Administers the DHHS medication exam to all new nurses in accordance with the state standard and provides individualized instruction to each newly hired nurse.

*Coordinates Nurse Orientation curriculum to develop orientation and training requirements necessary to practice as licensed nurses at Murdoch Developmental Center and meet mandates of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act. Assists in the implementation of Nurse Orientation for all new nurses, including teaching classes such as Seizure Management, Venipuncture, Assessment/Reporting/Recording, and others as assigned. Administers Ishihara's Test to all nurses.

* Monitors completion of competency requirements for new hires including clinical

performance evaluation for medication/treatment administration per policy.

* Coordinates/provides Venipuncture and Ambulance Orientation training for nurses as required by policy.

*Assist with training in electronic medical records systems. (EPIC)

Infection Prevention - Assists with interpretation of federal and state mandated Infection Control Standards (including OSHA) and develops training materials.

Other responsibilities- Maintain ERT/AERT Recertifications, Instructor for MDC orientation & BTS and Maintain the CLIA waiver.

* Chairs the following facility committees:

-Nurse Policy and Procedure

-Extended Academic Leave

Scheduled work hours/shift options: 1st shift, Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, 5days/week or 8:00am- 4:30pm, 5 days a week. Schedule adjustments as needed/requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Preferences:

Thorough knowledge of the theory of adult education and its application and nursing theories techniques and practice in the area of assignment; thorough knowledge of agency/program philosophies, policies and procedures; formal training programs; ability to apply judgment in assessing training needs and coordinating programs; ability to develop course outlines and lesson plans and to communicate information to a wide range of persons/programs; ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships and communication with outside facilities/agencies.

Must be able to complete all aspects of clinical competency/credentialing for clinical practice including: DHHS Medication Course, CPR, and NCI.

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of clinical experience in the area of specialization.
