STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To assess for, plan, organize, develop, and implement occupational therapy programs in the hospital and in the community to facilitate rehabilitation of the mentally or physically handicapped. Directs patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance performance; facilitates the learning of those skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, diminish or correct pathology and to promote and maintain health.

Full-time, benefited position working 80 hours per two week pay period. Days of work are Monday - Friday with hours from

8 am - 4:30 pm or variable 7:00 am - 5:00 pm.

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Evaluates, plans, develops, organizes, and implements occupational therapy programs for patients of all age groups (pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) involving activities of daily living and participation in a variety of sensorimotor, perceptual-motor, educational, recreational and social activities designed to help patients regain physical and/or mental functioning to their highest possible level.
  • Completes assessment of physical, psychological, cognitive and social needs and limitations for Swingbed patients.
  • Consults with other members of the rehabilitation team to select the most appropriate program consistent with the needs and capabilities of each patient.
  • Selects constructive program suited to the individual's physical capacity, cognitive level and interest.
  • Teaches patients the skills and techniques required for participation and independence in self-care activities and evaluates patients progress, attitudes and behavior as related to their rehabilitative potential.
  • Adapts program according to the needs of individual patients.
  • Performs work site analysis and provide written report with recommendations. Be available for hospital ergonomic assessment and recommendations.
  • Requisitions supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans and repairs tools and equipment as needed.
  • Conducts training programs and participates in training medical and nursing personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives.
  • Designs, fabricates, and fits adaptive devices such as splints and braces for patient use.
  • Records and reports patient's progress from each treatment session.
  • Provides therapy services for Home Health and other facilities or groups contracted through the hospital.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
  • PREPARATION AND TRAINING - Must have necessary requisites for licensure in ND and current registration by NBCOT. Will complete CPR every other year.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE - At least one year work experience as an occupational therapist is desirable but not required. Position is required to attend Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training in the appropriate timeframe according to department orientation checklist.
  • ATTENDENCE - Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employee are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule.
  • ANALYTICAL ABILITY - A very high degree of analytical ability is required to perform a majority of the therapist's duties. Analysis is an on going thing all day long with each patient, involving the continual assessment/reassessment of the patient's condition/responses and consequent adjustments needed to be made in regards to treatment plans and goals. Much ability is needed to assess patient scheduling and coordinate procedures as needed for efficient operation of the department.
  • INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT - The OT works under the supervision of the Rehab Manager in accordance with established Rehab Department policies and procedures. Demonstrate initiative and responsibility as most duties are autonomous in nature; much of work is performed with very little instruction being given to the therapist; errors in judgment may highly impact the financial or public relation stature of the Rehab Department and/or the hospital. Treatments are administered on a physician referral basis.
  • CONTACT AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS - A very high degree of an OT's duties involve contact with others (hospital employees, patients, physicians, etc) Imperative that this person maintain good relationships with co workers, patients, families, visitors; must be courteous and tactful at all times; should have good communication skills; and requires a very high level of interpersonal skills.
  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF OTHERS - The physical and/or emotional well-being of other employees and patients are highly impacted by the performance of the OT; consequences can be serious; most, if not all, of the therapist's activities during a day impact on the welfare of patients and employees; responsible for maintaining absolute confidentiality of information.
  • MENTAL/VISUAL EFFORT - Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must demonstrate physical and emotional ability to meet agreed upon work schedule and performance standards required by the position. Required duties are such that concentrated attention must be applied on demand consistent with manual skill requirements in situations that may at times be stressful. Visual acuity necessary for reading charts and working with medical devices; color perception necessary for interpreting testing procedures involving color comparisons. A very high degree of the OT's duties require intense mental application or attention to details; this is essential on a regular basis for the entire work day; assessment, treatment, planning, goal setting, program development, supervision of staff, documentation, record keeping, scheduling and communications.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS - Majority of position requirements are done within the Rehab Department of hospital; however, duties may be performed outside at a school, home, clinic or nursing home. Requires driving personal vehicle. Frequent walking, lifting and bending are required to perform normal duties. Pace can be demanding. Requires participation in and complies with JRMC Safety Management Program. Position requires exposure to patients with infectious disease and odor. Maintains knowledge of and observes Standard Precautions. Practices aseptic techniques whenever appropriate. OSHA Job Classification: This position is defined as a Category I: Employee does have exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Participates in and complies with Jamestown Regional Medical Center Safety Management program. Position is subject to frequent interruptions. Work may be beyond normal working hours. Work may be on weekends and holidays; beyond normal working hours and/or temporarily in other positions when necessary
