About the Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics provides comprehensivefamily-centered health care to all children, multi-level professional educationto students, physicians, and allied health care workers in all aspects ofpediatrics, and a voice of advocacy for children of the state of Illinois. Weare also actively engaged in the community to improve the health status ofchildren through preventative and educational efforts, and to lead with basicand clinical research into childhood diseases to move the field of pediatricsforward. About the Section of Genetics

The section of Pediatric Genetics provides state-of-the-art diagnostic andclinical evaluation services and treatment for children and adults who havebirth defects and genetic disorders. Services also include genetic counseling;carrier testing; and prenatal diagnosis for prospective parents. We have anon-site comprehensive diagnostic biochemical and molecular genetics laboratoryto provide fast, reliable diagnosis and treatment. We have an active newbornscreen follow up program for inborn errors of metabolism funded by a grant fromthe Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). We also provide geneticseducation for pediatric house staff, medical students, and genetic counselingstudents.

JobSummary:
TheDepartment of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois Chicago is seeking aboard-certified Metabolic Geneticist with expertise in biochemicalgenetics. Faculty rank and tenure will be commensurate with experience.

Dutiesand Responsibilities:
Diagnosisand Genetic Counseling: Identifying and diagnosing inherited metabolicdisorders through genetic testing and clinical evaluation. Providing geneticcounseling to patients and families regarding the nature of the disorder,inheritance patterns, and implications for future pregnancies.

MedicalManagement: Developing and implementing treatment plans for patients withmetabolic disorders. This may include dietary modifications, medicationmanagement, enzyme replacement therapy, or other specialized treatments.

Researchand Clinical Trials: Conducting or participating in research studies andclinical trials aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of metabolicdisorders. This could involve basic science research, translational research,or clinical research.

PatientCare and Follow-up: Monitoring patients with metabolic disorders over time toassess their progress, manage any complications, and adjust treatment plans asneeded. Providing ongoing support and guidance to patients and their families.

Collaboration:Working closely with other healthcare professionals, such as geneticcounselors, pediatricians, internists, dietitians, and specialized nurses, tocoordinate comprehensive care for patients with metabolic disorders.

Education:Educating medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcareprofessionals about metabolic disorders, their diagnosis, management, and thelatest advancements in the field.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO from accredited medical school or foreign equivalent medical degree.
  • Unrestricted Illinois license to practice medicine or Illinois license eligible.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Pediatrics required.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Medical Genetics required.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Biochemical Genetics or Clinical Biochemical Genetics preferred.
