ATI is seeking to hire an Operations Engineer (Process Modeling and Automation) to support our Specialty Rolled Products business unit. This position will be based in Vandergrift, PA.
The Operations Engineer (Process Modeling and Automation) position includes responsibility for defining, refining, and reviewing the functionality and performance of mission critical automation and control systems in an industrial environment. These systems are part of an integrated solution and will include process models, recipes, learning algorithms, and process control logic. The facility has both thermal and cold rolling Operations that will be model and recipe driven. As a specialty materials producer the product mix is extremely broad with new product development, simulation, and commissioning occurring frequently. The Position works with Production, Maintenance, Technical Services, and Process Engineering departments to accomplish goals related to process and quality improvements, cost reduction, equipment obsolescence/integration, and automation improvement.

Essential Functions
- Support a Capital project to apply process models and automation:
- Work with Team and vendors to define functional requirements
- Work with Team and vendors to define a commissioning plan
- Work with vendors to test system performance to achieve defined functional requirements both prior to commissioning and as a part of commissioning
- Work with vendors to provide sufficient documentation and tools to allow long-term support of the new systems.
- Manage the new models-based manufacturing systems
- Model through simulation new product for manufacture, implement setups for new product, monitor existing manufacturing processes for health.
- Manage learning algorithms to refine plant model as well as product models
- Feedback regulators for both model-based and PLC systems.
- Lead/participate in problem-solving activities; engineer and implement solutions.
- Data analytics review of process events
- Interact with internal staff and shop floor personnel, as required, in the performance of job responsibilities.
- Work within a team of model engineers to develop best practices and cross-train for coverage
- Share 24-hour, 7 day, on-call support responsibilities on a rotating basis with existing staff.
Basic Qualifications
- BS degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics
Preferred Qualifications
- MS or PhD in a Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
- Academic background in control theory, or associated experience such as:
- Mathematical modeling of a physical process
- Feedback Control theory, PID loops, or other forms of regulators
- Understanding of process automation through integrated systems.
- Experience with structured text programming such as, Python, Java, C++ and SQL
- Understanding of SPC
- Basic project management skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to provide technical leadership in the automation systems area.
- Ability to problem solve and maintain systems with the associated attention to detail and reliability.
- Ability to deliver high-quality, well documented solutions, and be able to work effectively with minimal instruction.
- Ability to organize, lead projects and audits effectively
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written with internal and external customers at all levels
- Ability to accomplish goals with excellent judgment, motivation, and planning capabilities
- Ability to develop better methods or techniques. Must apply professional knowledge.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills required.
- Proficiency with MS Office 2010 or newer.
