Description
The purpose of this position is to direct the administrative and logistical operations of County Detention Center employees and inmates. Responsible for all record-keeping, booking reports and daily operations log. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

Examples of Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Assists the Captain/Training Officer in the planning and presentation of Detention Officer training.
  • Prepares and distributes bills to municipalities and other agencies for the room and board of prisoners being housed by the County.
  • Monitors Center expenditures; maintains balanced budget book.
  • Monitors and completes booking reports, daily operation log and other records.
  • Completes employee applications to the Criminal Justice Academy, inmate applications for work release, requests for jail time and various other official forms.
  • Prepares and submits employee and inmate payroll documents.
  • Maintains inventory of required supplies and equipment; prepares purchase requisitions for approval.
  • Assists in providing the security, custody, control and classification of inmates.
  • Supervises Detention Center inmates. Enforces adherence to all rules and regulations of inmate conduct.
  • Assists in supervising the booking and release of all inmates.
  • Ensures safe keeping of inmate personal belongings.
  • Plans and manages inmate food service operations.
  • Responds to emergency calls after-hours and on weekends.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires an Associate's Degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college or university
  • Over eight years and up to and including ten years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • SCJJA state certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • SCCJA Basic Instructor
  • NCIC Certification

Supplemental Information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
