Lyon Shipyard is a full-service shipyard for dry dockings, repairs and fabrication. The Shipyard specializes in all types of commercial and government vessels and barges, as well as both on-site and off-site topside work, steel fabrication and emergency repairs of every kind. The company has been in continuous business for almost 100 years.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Proven leader responsible for all production, dry dockings, vessel repairs, yard support and administrative functions needed for safe and efficient shipyard operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Develops budgets; establishes shipyard and departmental goals; ensures compliance with all Safety, Quality, Company and Regulatory directives; directs activities in areas of safety and personnel, production, scheduling, material handling, and quality; primary duty would be manage, direct and train the project and operations managers.
PLANNING & LEADERSHIP:
Provides management and leadership to project and operations managers.
Integrates functions in a multi-discipline work environment
Makes decisions guided by resource availability and functional objectives
Directs and coordinates shipyard operations within company policies and procedures
Maintains a clean and safe vessels
Fosters a well-trained and motivated staff
Translates company strategies into tactical plans. Creates and prioritizes necessary resources and steps required to accomplish goals on time
Coordinates with all functional areas of the shipyard to ensure production schedules are met
Advises departments regarding manning and expense goals and ensures efforts are made to meet budget projections
Determines improvements and repairs along with annual costs and projections
Utilizes Continuous Improvement Strategies
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Reports to the Vice President of Production
Establishes and integrates organization operational objectives and assignments
Responsible for product quality control for the Shipyard
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
In depth knowledge of all business functions associated with shipyard management
Ability to apply Continuous Improvement strategies across all functions, which includes the ability to introduce needed change, create excitement for change and lead change initiatives. Must be adaptable and open to new ideas
Ability to refine communication skills based on their audience uses active listening skills and non-verbal rapport building skills and effectively communicates their message to both small and large groups
Ability to make quick decisions, take calculated risks and make tough calls. Must be able to gain input from many different people and use a participative decision-making approach when appropriate
Ability to establish clear and consistent expectations and follow up on critical tasks without micro-managing and hold people accountable in a tough, but fair manner
Ability to motivate and connect with people with a sense of enthusiasm, passion and commitment for their work and encourage them to do their best
Ability to analyze situations, react quickly and work collaboratively. Able to anticipate future events based on past experiences and work to get ahead of impending issues
Considerable knowledge of labor, safety and product related state and federal regulations and practices
Considerable knowledge of Company policies, procedures and practices or the ability to acquire it quickly
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
Ability to establish and meet goals
Ability to successfully handle several priorities simultaneously
Ability to lead and function on a team, and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees
Ability to manage a team consistent with strategic goals and select members that fit requirements necessary for the team to be successful
Applies good judgment and maintains composure in high pressure situations and maintain objectivity and focus
Ability to view setbacks as manageable and treat people respectfully when engaged in high-stakes situations
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
Minimum 15 years of experience as a shipyard manager
Experience with Profit and Loss Responsibility
Experience in ship repair, particularly tugs and barges
Completion of four years of college level course work equivalent to a B.S. in production management or engineering and extensive experience managing multiple areas within a shipyard facility combined with considerable supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which results in the required knowledge, skills and abilities
