The Paper Machine Superintendent holds a pivotal role in paper manufacturing, leveraging specialized technical knowledge to oversee operations, and troubleshoot issues efficiently. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilizes extensive knowledge of Pratt Industries advanced paper-related technology production techniques, guide and direct the maintenance department, chemical department, and instrumentation department with respect to production needs;
- Manages specialized technical staff responsible for stock preparation, pulping, pressing, drying, and finishing activities of the papermaking process;
- Train all machine operators with respect to safety and production techniques;
- Exercises senior-level discretion over the daily activities under his control with authority to recommend personnel actions; and
- Responsible for implementing safety and quality assurance standards and quality should he determine, in his discretion, that those standards are not being met.
- Responsible for decision making in the area of budgeting and capital expenditures in excess of $10,000,000.
- Responsible for tactical and strategic planning.
- Responsible for research and product development.
- As a member of the senior level management team works closely with Production Manager and General Manager to ensure Operations run smoothly.
- In the absence of the Production Manager will act as interim Production Manager.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Strong and effective communications and inter-personal skills.
- Computer literate and able to learn quickly and efficiently.
- Strong mechanical/process background with technical and trouble shooting skills.
- Must be a team player and be able to effectively communicate with a wide variety of people including floor personnel, engineers, managers, and staff.
- BS degree in Pulp and Paper Science or related area is strongly preferred.
- 5-8 years' experience in a pulp and paper mill production.
- Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form. Ability to deal with problems involving one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
LANGUAGE SKILLS-
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures, manuals, regulations, and codes
- Ability to write business reports and correspondence
- Ability to communicate effectively with suppliers, contractors, employees and outside officials to the company
- Clear, concise oral and written communication skills
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form. Ability to deal with problems involving one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Employee is regularly required to walk, talk, and hear
- Employee is frequently required to stand; use hands, feel; and reach with hands and arms
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Ability to operate mobile equipment such as forklifts and booms
- Ability to work at heights
