San Diego Superior Court is seeking additional qualified candidates for the position of Paralegal. Candidates who previously applied under Exam No. 24-013 and qualified to be on the eligible list do not need to reapply.
There is one (1) upcoming vacancy in the Family Law Facilitator (FLF) Office located at the North County Courthouse, 325 South Melrose Drive in Vista.
JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of the Family Law Facilitator or FLF Staff Attorney, a Paralegal assigned to FLF assists self-represented litigants (SRLs) in family law cases. Typical duties may include interacting with SRLs on a one-on-one basis; providing general legal information about family law, applicable court processes and procedures; reviewing the court case file and performing a case analysis to determine legal options available to the SRL; selecting, preparing and completing legal forms and documents; reviewing completed court forms for legal and factual sufficiency; and conducting family law workshops.
The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have the following:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Legal research methods and techniques; legal processes, practices and procedures applicable to family law; state codes applicable to family law; legal terminology; and English grammar, spelling and legal writing practices, including proper technical formats.
ABILITY TO:
Research legal issues; synthesize legal and factual information; apply legal principles; present statements of fact clearly and logically in written and oral form; prepare legal documents, including judgments and orders after hearing; maintain confidentiality; establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, court staff, members of the Bar, and the general public; communicate effectively with people who may be emotionally upset, confused or uncooperative; operate a personal computer and utilize office automation software; and prioritize work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In accordance with California Business & Professions Code Section 6450(c), a Paralegal applicant must possess at least ONE of the following listed below:
1. A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association; OR
2. A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester units (or equivalent) in law-related courses, and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education; OR
3. A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject; a minimum of one (1) year of full-time, law-related experience* under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three (3) years, or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three (3) years; and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks; OR
4. A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma; a minimum of three (3) years of full-time, law-related experience* under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three (3) years, or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three (3) years; and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. The three (3) years of full-time, law-related experience and training must have been completed no later than December 31, 2003.
*Applicable law-related experience as mentioned in #3 and #4 above is defined as tasks which must have included conducting research of legal issues and drafting legal documents.
