Seeking a highly specialized medical professional who assists pathologists in performing autopsies, preparing and examining tissue samples, and conducting laboratory tests to diagnose diseases.
Job Description:
  • Tissue Handling & Processing: Assist pathologists with the gross examination of surgical specimens, ensuring proper identification, dissection, and documentation. Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination and can assist in the preparation of slides for further testing.
  • Autopsies: Conduct post-mortem exams under the supervision of a pathologist. This includes preparing and handling the body, removing organs, performing dissections, and collecting samples for analysis.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate records of specimen descriptions, findings, and procedures. Prepare reports, ensuring all information is recorded in the medical record systems.
  • Laboratory Procedures: Assist in laboratory work such as performing quality control checks, maintaining lab equipment, and ensuring proper laboratory safety protocols are followed.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with pathologists, medical examiners, and other healthcare professionals to provide essential diagnostic information. May also liaise with medical staff, providing technical guidance related to pathology procedures.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance: Follow medical, legal, and ethical standards, including HIPAA regulations, and ensure that the laboratory and autopsy rooms are sanitized and compliant with state health regulations.
  • Education and Training: May be involved in training and supervising students, residents, or other medical professionals in pathology and laboratory procedures.
Requirements:
  • Educational Requirements:
    • Master of Science degree or Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Certification:
    • ASCP certified as a Pathologist Assistant.
  • Licensing:
    • NY State Pathologist Assistant License required.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology: Detailed understanding of human anatomy and pathology is essential for dissecting and examining specimens accurately.
    • Laboratory and Technical Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques, including tissue processing and slide preparation, as well as understanding of medical instruments used in pathology.
