Overview
The Director, Patient Safety Program position has the responsibility for directing the patient safety program for Novant Health Coastal Market. Coordination among senior leaders, medical group leaders, practice managers and operational and clinical support personnel will enhance system reliability and improve patient safety within the framework of the First Do No Harm (FDNH) patient safety program. System improvement efforts will use quality and process improvement methodology through analysis of patient safety events, patient safety and quality metrics, patient safety culture assessment, and other available data. Ongoing improvement and strategic planning will draw from the evolving fields of patient safety science, healthcare quality research, and evidence-based best practices.

The Director, Patient Safety Program position has the responsibility for directing the patient safety program for Novant Health Coastal Market. Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors Degree required.
- Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in appropriate state required.
- Experience: 5 years healthcare leadership experience required. A minimum of 3 years of quality improvement/ project management experience required.
- Additional skills required: Strong written and verbal communication skills; general computer knowledge; ability to self-direct, manage time and resources; ability to problem-solve and make decisions independently; ability to lead and function within a high-performing team; ability to travel throughout the NHMG footprint. Valid Drivers license.

Major Job Functions
- Develops and manages the annual Coastal Market patient safety strategic plan.
- Leads and supports workgroups and project plans that focus on reducing patient safety events
- Plans agenda and facilitates Coastal Market FDNG monthly meeting,
- Leads patient safety workgroup in Coastal Market for falls improvement screening and management.
- Leads medication safety workgroup for vaccine safety, standardization, schedule and savings.
- Leads team in comparative analysis of e-RL and Journey reporting.
- Leads NHMG in transition to e-RL for safety event reporting.
- Monitors and analyzes patient safety events for trends and potential areas of patient harm.
- Supports work in medication safety workgroup for anticoagulation management.
- Supports work on multiple antimicrobial stewardship improvement initiatives.
- Directs the patient safety coach (PSC) program to maintain a patient safety focus within all levels of NHMG practice operations.
- Conducts monthly teleconferences for PSCs to enhance the culture of safety in our clinics
- Engages PSCs in clinic-specific projects supporting program's major initiatives.
- Oversees the appointment and training of new PSCs.
- Collaborates with Novant Health patient safety, clinical excellence, accreditation and regulatory, and risk management personnel for consistency in how FDNH is executed between acute and ambulatory settings including attending market and system FDNH meetings.
- Supports NH risk management for review and scoring of safety events.
- Facilitates comprehensive systematic analysis (CSA) for all Serious Safety Events
- Interacts with other Coastal Market clinical and operational leaders to align efforts and ensure patient safety is a focus.
- Monitors Coastal Market clinical operations and processes to maintain consistency with FDNH and high reliability principals.
- Participates in the development and review of policies and procedures relating to quality and safety.
- Develops, maintains, and delivers patient safety FDNH education and training for providers, leaders and team members.
- Monitors and improves all domains of patient safety culture including, but not limited to fair and just response to error, communication openness, transparency, team member engagement and teamwork.
- Knows and complies with applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies' recommendations and requirements
