GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Pharmacist-in-Charge is responsible for Shenandoah Pharmacy's compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations and for maintaining records and inventory. The Pharmacist-in-Charge is accountable for the management, oversight and operation of all aspects of Shenandoah Pharmacy including patient safety, pharmacy professional practice, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, customer service, personnel management, inventory management, clinical support for Shenandoah Community Health, and workflow management. The Pharmacist-in-Charge must ensure Shenandoah Pharmacy supports the Mission and Vision of Shenandoah Community Health and that all employees of Shenandoah Pharmacy work consistently to implement Shenandoah Community Health's "Core Dimensions": Respect, Empathy, Genuineness, and Specificity.

JOB DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Develops and maintains internal relationships (accounting, legal, national) and external relationships (wholesalers, manufacturers, software vendors) as needed.
  • Actively engages with senior leadership and participates in decision-making processes related to the implementation of new pharmacy initiatives or goals. Informs leadership of pharmacy issues, law or rule changes, needs, and budgetary concerns.
  • The Pharmacist-in-Charge shall be responsible for Shenandoah Pharmacy's compliance with all rules or laws set forth by the United States DEA, Virginia Board of Pharmacy, and any other regulatory agencies that oversee pharmacy practice.
  • The Pharmacist-in-Charge is responsible for making or filing any reports required by state or federal laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to Shenandoah Pharmacy.
  • The Pharmacist-in-Charge shall insure that all policies and procedures of Shenandoah Community Health for maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of prescription information and patient health care information are followed.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Patient Care
  • Greets the patient at all encounters in a cheerful, professional and compassionate manner.
  • Consistently ensures that all patient questions are answered and documented, as is necessary, before the patient leaves the pharmacy area. This includes counseling on the treatment of minor ailments, health issues, prescription and OTC medications, drug therapy concerns, or medication interactions.
    • Operations
  • Properly supervises all pharmacists, pharmacy technician, technician trainees, and cashiers in the performance of their job duties, taking special care to ensure that all legal requirements regarding the provision of pharmaceutical care are being fulfilled.
  • Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' workflow, verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals, and verifying order entries, charges, and inspections. Drives workflow of the pharmacy to meet patient and SCH needs.
  • Establishes and maintains consistent policies and procedures for Shenandoah Pharmacy that ensure productivity and efficiency so that the pharmacy does not hamper overall operations or create unnecessary costs.
  • Serves on various committees as assigned.
  • Serves as the pharmacy point of contact for the Finance department.
  • Responsible for establishing regular communication with the providers and Board of Directors of SCH regarding pharmacy initiatives and performance. Meet regularly with the Pharmacy Director to discuss pharmacy performance and needs.
    • Staff & Performance Management
      • Promotes teamwork and motivates team members by leading by example.
      • Provides constructive feedback and positively reinforces staff regarding good work habits or excellent patient service.
  • Reinforces the direction of staff performance by coaching, monitoring patient service, and encouraging and mentoring employee development. Completes periodic Performance Logs and annual Performance Evaluations with direct reports.
  • Works to ensure the efficient staffing of the pharmacy by evaluating overtime, approving or denying time off requests, and balancing the pharmacists schedule to daily pharmacy needs.
    • Professionalism and Training
      • Maintains current knowledge and skills related to pharmacy and healthcare, including knowledge related to 340B drug program and Shenandoah Community Health.
      • Completes all necessary Pharmacist Continuing Education.
  • Attends regular Pharmacy and 340B trainings/conferences and shares lessons and hot topics with staff.
  • Routinely monitors industry publications and websites as well as the professional media, literature, and peers to ensure that the institution has the latest information regarding pharmacy practice.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior with patients, families, co-workers, subordinates, supervisors, and other SCH staff.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Licensed in good standing by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
    • Knowledge of federal and state-specific laws/regulations governing pharmacy practice, including controlled substances regulations.
    • Competency with age groups served by SCH.
    • Knowledge of Medication Use Programs, pharmacy computer systems, and inventory management.
    • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Previous supervisory experience in a retail pharmacy setting
    • Previous experience with 340B drug program
    • Dual licensure in Virginia and West Virginia
    • Previous experience working with pharmacy software
    • Bilingual (Spanish Preferred)
