Summary

The division of Abdominal Transplant in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Advanced Practice Provider to provide high-quality hepatobiliary and transplant medical care under the direction of physicians at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center's Abdominal Transplant and Liver Disease service. The candidate will be expected to provide clinical excellence and scholarly enthusiasm. The provider will have direct patient care responsibilities. The selected candidate will be appointed as a faculty Instructor and be eligible for full faculty benefits.

  • Schedule: Four ten-hour workdays Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri. Option for M-F eight-hour workdays as well.
  • Common diagnoses treated: Liver cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, fatty liver disease, Wilson's disease, alcohol-related liver disease, liver masses, cholecystitis, bile duct injuries, as well as pre and post liver transplantation care along with the transplant coordinators


Job Duties

Primary responsibilities include independent primarily outpatient care of hepatobiliary and abdominal transplant patients with inpatient coverage one to two days per week with coordination as needed to assigned surgeons(s).

  • Medical management of a variety of hepatological and nephrological conditions.
  • Management of pre- and post-transplant patients.
  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Interpretation of patient results, including reviewing imaging.
  • Prescription of appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care. Collaborate with Hepatologists, nephrologists, transplant surgeons, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education Required:
  • Physician Assistant Candidates: Master's degree in physician assistant studies. Bachelor's degree in physician assistant studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
  • Nurse Practitioner Candidates: Master's degree in nursing.


Certification/Licenses/Registration:
  • Physician Assistant Candidates: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board.
  • Nurse Practitioner Candidates: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP).


Experience Required: None required.

Specialty certification as required by department.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
