Role Responsibilities
Are you passionate about land stewardship, environmental sustainability, and shaping the future of Alberta's natural landscapes? Alberta's Integrated Resource Management System (IRMS) supports the environmental, economic, and social outcomes that Albertans expect through sound land use planning, cumulative effects management, and sustainable resource development.
We are seeking a Planning Lead to provide strategic leadership and coordination for land use planning initiatives in central and southern Alberta. This position plays a key role in delivering the department's mandate, ensuring consistency and integration across planning levels and scales-from local to regional.
As a Planning Lead, you will:
Lead the development of sub-regional and local land use plans that align with environmental, economic, and social objectives.
Lead the Department's input into regional plans.
Ensure land use planning supports sustainable use of Crown lands for Albertans, industry, and Indigenous traditional practices, while protecting Alberta's watersheds, landscapes, and biodiversity.
Collaborate with Indigenous communities, municipalities, stakeholders, and cross-ministry partners to build integrated planning approaches.
Lead and mentor a team of planners and specialists, providing coaching, strategic direction, and performance oversight.
Manage complex, multi-year planning initiatives and ensure adherence to timelines, budgets, and project objectives.
Prepare high-level briefings for executive leadership, the Minister, and Cabinet regarding policy shifts or new legislative directions.
Foster an inclusive, respectful, and accountable culture, aligned with Government of Alberta values.
The successful candidate will demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, strong communication skills, political acumen and a strong commitment to client service and building collaborative relationships.

Qualifications
University graduation in a related field (e.g. natural resources management, land-use planning, geological sciences, environmental planning, Planning, Economics, Engineering, Civil Engineering) plus 6 years progressively responsible related experience in land use planning; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year education.
Other mandatory requirements:
Proven leadership experience, including team supervision and project management in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills, particularly in working with Indigenous communities, industry, NGOs, and other government departments.
Knowledge of Alberta's land use framework, environmental legislation, and Indigenous and Treaty rights.
Experience integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge into planning is a strong asset.
Experience in GIS will be considered as an asset.
