OVERVIEW:
The Department of Sociocultural Studies is committed to excellence in lower division education for majors and non-majors. The faculty work closely together to support one another while supporting student success, completion, and transfer. We seek a well-rounded political science instructor with a strong foundation in U.S. Government, American Institutions, and local and global political systems. We seek candidates who utilize a public sphere pedagogical approach centered on students, and a commitment to equity.

The person selected should be able to demonstrate an excellence in teaching that inspires students' critical reading, writing, and thinking. This person should demonstrate an ability to engage learners from a diverse range of abilities and identities. They should be knowledgeable of all subfields within Political Science and demonstrate a commitment to promoting active learning and a community approach to teaching.

POSITION DUTIES:
In addition to the representative duties listed below, this position is also responsible for:
  • Teaching courses such as United States Government, California State and Local Government, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, Research Methods, and Politics of Race and Ethnicity.
  • Working collaboratively with others on department related tasks like curriculum development, discipline activities, lectures, events, Student Learning Outcome reporting, and other duties as assigned.
  • Teaching in-person at the Glenn Center, Main Campus, and Chico Center, as well as local area High Schools.

  • Each faculty member will prepare a Self-Reflection statement using the approved format as described in Appendix G2 V. This statement is intended to foster a conversation among colleagues that reflects on how faculty can individually and collectively work to improve student outcomes for historically under-represented and disproportionately impacted populations. The self-reflection statement should be used to help advance individual professional development and institutional dialogue on change.

  • Qualifications/Requirements
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master's in political science, government, or international relations; OR
    • Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in economics, history, public administration, social science, sociology, and any ethnic studies, Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.); OR
    • Possession of a current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an instructor in the applicable discipline; OR
    • The (Applicants wishing to be considered for employment under District equivalency standards must submit a detailed statement explaining how you possess the equivalent to the minimum qualifications discussed above.)

    • Experience designing curriculum and teaching 100 level courses in all subfields of Political Science, such as Intro to United States Government, Into to State and local government, Intro to IR, and Intro to Comparative Politics.
    • Graduate coursework in all subfields of Political Science.
    • Awareness of and commitment to teaching with a public sphere pedagogical approach, as well as other innovative active learning approaches.
    • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds and abilities of community college students, including but not limited to academic, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic factors, as well as students who are Disabled, LGBTQIA+, ESL learners, and Veterans.
    • Understanding of and commitment to using anti-racist, culturally responsive, assets-based, and collaborative methods in curriculum and pedagogy.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with others on department related tasks.
    • Demonstrates currency in the field of political science.
    • Teaching methods that respond and adapt to the use of current technologies to meet students' needs.
    • Demonstrated awareness and application of Universal Design for Learning.

  • Education Code 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that they are free of active tuberculosis.
