Essential Tasks
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
- Teach a variety of political science courses, which is likely to include a mix of introductory political science for majors and non-majors, government, and history.
- Prepare innovative teaching & learning activities and assessments that are consistent with the official course outlines.
- Participate in curriculum planning and regular revisions in conjunction with the department.
- Hold at least 5 office hours per week in modalities appropriate for the courses taught (e.g., online office hours for online classes).
- Advise students as part of the Guided Pathways advising process.
- Participate in college-wide committees (such as assessment, curriculum, or accreditation committee).
- Select and prepare Open Educational Resources (OER) and/or order textbooks and other course materials in coordination with the campus bookstore.
- Implement and assess teaching methods intended to close achievement gaps between demographic groups.
- Assess and evaluate individual student progress, maintain student records, refer students to other appropriate college staff as necessary, and demonstrate student-centered values consistent with the community college philosophy.
- Commitment to systematic classroom, department, and college assessment and improvement.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned master's degree in political science.
- Successful experience working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations in education and in the local communities.
- Commitment to the community college mission and values.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in a multicultural setting and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
ABILITY TO:
- Demonstrate dedication to students by creating an equitable environment conducive to meeting students' learning needs.
- Demonstrate student-centered values consistent with student-focused, innovative teaching.
- Demonstrate commitment to upgrade knowledge and skills to maintain relevant curriculum.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for using and learning new technologies to support student success.
- Provide student-centered academic advising within YVC's Guided Pathways model.
- Provide time for student consultations outside of scheduled class time.
- Serve on institutional and community committees, including advisory and K-12 partnership committees.
- Contribute to fostering diversity of the campus, curriculum, or discipline.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience teaching a variety of political science courses such as Introduction to Political Science, American Government, International Relations, Comparative Government, as well as courses in a related discipline, such as history at the college level.
- Experience or a willingness to learn teaching in a variety of different modalities (in-person/hybrid/online).
- Experience or evidence of willingness to work in a participatory collegiate community (e.g., committees, advising, college activities).
- Ability to use a variety of classroom methodologies (e.g., varied assessment techniques, collaborative learning, classroom technologies, interactive teaching).
- Experience developing Political science and/or curricula in a related discipline.
- Understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy of student-focused education and promotion of life-long learning.
- Experience or clearly stated interest in teaching diverse populations and reducing achievement gaps.
KNOWLDEGE OF:
- Current and effective pedagogical techniques.
- Culturally responsive pedagogy.
- Antiracist pedagogy.
