The Team
Come join a passionate team of individuals supporting Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL's) Pollution Prevention program. Pollution prevention (P2), also known as source reduction, is any practice that reduces, eliminates, or prevents pollution at its source prior to recycling, treatment or disposal. LANL's P2 program is part of the Environmental Stewardship group in the Environmental Protection and Compliance division, and heavily collaborates and integrates with other environmental, sustainability, compliance, and waste programs across the site. This exciting program supports LANL's environmental protection mission by emphasizing source reduction projects for various waste and pollutants, including providing funding to LANL Principal Investigators for independent projects. The P2 program currently supports additional initiatives such as emerging contaminants, fugitive emission capture and reuse, sustainable acquisition, and reduction or avoidance of hazardous and nuclear waste generation.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

- Developing improved purchasing practices to prioritize products with reduced environmental impact.
- Reducing nuclear waste inventory through process improvement.
- Integrating environmental best practices across LANL.
- Identifying socially and environmentally responsible end-of-life disposal paths for materials.
- Investigating and preventing the use of emerging contaminants such as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and dioxin/furan onsite.
- Preparing LANL for climate change, such as reducing site greenhouse gas footprint, water resource planning, and climate resilience planning.
- Lead projects that solve a LANL-specific pollution prevention challenge in response to institutional priorities. Includes developing questions, finding answers, and conveying solutions to management.
- Analyze current waste generation processes and recommend sound environmental practices.
- Research process improvement opportunities that reduce environmental and social impacts.
- Interface with all levels of Laboratory staff, students, and managers, the Department of Energy (DOE), federal subject matter experts (SMEs), stakeholders, the public, and other DOE sites.
- Apply academic concepts of waste minimization, sustainability, life cycle assessments, risk assessments, process mapping and/or process improvement to emerging challenges at LANL.
- Work towards DOE and Federal orders and goals, such as DOE Order 436.1A and Executive Orders 14008 and 14057.
- Demonstrate a willingness to take initiative on projects where little is known.
- Foster a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge in several of the following areas:
- Source reduction, or waste avoidance
- Process mapping and/or process improvement
- Environmental, economic, and social sustainability
- Another area of environmental improvement unique to the candidate's education or job experience
- Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems affecting waste minimization and/or environmental protection.
- Skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of pollution prevention to both technical and non-technical personnel. Skill in the preparation and presentation of reports.
- Demonstrated willingness to take on projects outside of your comfort zone and area of expertise.
- Active Q Clearance or the ability to obtain DOE Q Clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

- Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Other software experience benefiting job duties, and minimum job requirements.
- Working knowledge of federal organizations, processes, and fiscal management.
- Bachelor's degree strongly oriented toward science, engineering, technology, and/or economics is preferred.
