Description:
A sleep (polysomnographic) technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and home sleep apnea testing.
The role involves diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and comprehensive patient care.
The technologist provides sleep-related education and support to patients and families.
A sleep technologist performs the duties defined for a sleep technician and provides general oversight of other sleep center staff.
The technologist is credentialed in sleep technology.
This role includes efficiently and accurately scoring at least two studies per shift of the polysomnograms collected according to accepted professional standards.
Technologists consistently meet or exceed inter-scorer reliability quality standards.
The position requires comprehensive patient testing, education, and analysis for all patient populations served.
Technologists mentor/precept staff and engage in and champion quality and performance improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities include documenting patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing.
The technologist reviews and verifies departmental orders for testing.
They acquire and document additional information from the patient or ordering provider as needed to ensure the appropriateness of testing and parameters.
Routine positive airway pressure interface fitting, desensitization, and education are performed.
Technologists prepare patients for testing according to policy, selecting appropriate equipment per order.
They document routine observations during testing.
Technologists correlate physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of data.
They perform equipment and physiologic calibrations to ensure quality data.
Monitoring data quality to ensure recording is artifact-free is essential.
Equipment cleaning and disinfection, along with assurance of infection and quality control according to policy, is performed.
Technologists implement appropriate interventions, including patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions.
They follow Lights On procedures to verify the integrity of data, and the completeness of test documentation and patient forms.
Developing and maintaining effective working relationships and communicating professionally and respectfully with all customers is important.
Technologists assist in requesting and maintaining testing supplies and participate in routine department tasks and the orderliness of the work area.
They score sleep/wake stages and clinical events, such as respiratory events, cardiac events, and limb movements, using professionally accepted guidelines.
Technologists generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data, utilizing the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.
They support and participate in quality and performance improvement initiatives.
Following procedural protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing is required.
Technologists directly participate in training and oversight of Polysomnographic Trainees and Technicians.
Real-time scoring during PSG testing and CPAP titration is performed.
Attending customer service training and serving as a front-line resource to manage patient and family service recovery is part of the role.
Technologists serve as a resource to support comprehensive sleep study completion within the sleep labs.
They ensure sleep study procedure policy adherence and support troubleshooting acquisition software and hardware technical challenges.
