DEFINITION:
The principal is the chief administrative officer for Melrose Elementary School. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, establishing a positive educational climate, engaging in a variety of supportive management and organizational tasks, providing direction and implementing the educational program, managing school/parent/community relations, collaboratively setting and leading school-wide academic goals, and overseeing academic, athletic and student activities. This position reports directly to the superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possess a valid state of Ohio license for K-6 principal or superintendent
  • Demonstrate administrative leadership at the building level
  • Demonstrate skill in supervision and evaluation
  • Demonstrate skill in oral and written communication

KEY FUNCTIONS:

A. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

The elementary school principal will help create a shared vision and clear goals for the building and ensure continuous progress toward achieving the goals.

Representative Elements:
1. Facilitate the articulation and realization of a shared vision of continuous improvement.
2. Lead the process of setting, monitoring and achieving specific and challenging goals that reflect high expectations for all students and staff.
3. Lead the change process for continuous improvement.
4. Anticipate, monitor and respond to educational developments that affect school issues and environment.

B. INSTRUCTION
The elementary school principal will support the implementation of high-quality standards-based instruction that results in higher levels of achievement for all students.

Representative Elements:
1. Ensure that the instructional content that is taught is aligned with the Ohio academic content standards and curriculum priorities in the school and district.
2. Ensure instructional practices are effective and meet the needs of all students.
3. Advocate for higher levels of learning for all students, including students identified as gifted, students with disabilities and at-risk students.
4. Know, understand and share relevant research.
5. Understand, encourage and facilitate the effective use of data by staff.
6. Support staff in planning and implementing research-based professional development.

C. OPERATIONS AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The principal is responsible for allocating resources and managing school operations to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.

1. Establish and maintain a safe school environment.
2. Create a nurturing learning environment that addresses the physical and mental health needs of all.
3. Allocate resources, including technology, to support student and staff learning.
4. Institute procedures and practices to support staff and students and establish an environment that is conducive to learning.
5. Understand, uphold and model professional ethics, policies and legal codes of professional conduct.

D. COLLABORATION
The principal will establish and sustain collaborative learning and shared leadership to promote learning and achievement of all students.

2. Share leadership with staff, students, parents and community members.
3. Develop and sustain leadership.

E. PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The principal will engage parents and community members in the educational process and create an environment where community resources support student learning, achievement and well-being.
