Come work on the Amazon Worldwide Fulfillment Design & Engineering Team! We are looking for an exceptional Principal Research Scientist, someone that is excited to work on complex real-world challenges for which a comprehensive scientific approach is necessary to drive solutions. Your investigations will include identifying and mitigating risks resulting in robust design and implementation of safe and reliable fulfillment center designs.

We are seeking a Principal Reliability Scientist who will be responsible to lead researach specific to reliability for Amazon Fulfillment Facilities.

Key job responsibilities

a. Employing a Failure based approach to develop and implement both analytical and empirical methods for identifying and evaluating risks at the stages of facility design, MHE selection, and deployment.

b. Lead research activities related to validation Design initiatives for a warehouse, Develop predictive modelling techniques, and test plans.

c. Lead AI-powered solutions that combine data, machine learning, and domain knowledge about asset operations to help anticipate reliability risks, increase uptime, manage CapEx and OpEx costs, and improve productivity.

d. Identifying gaps in current design standards and guidelines, and lead comprehensive research to redefine "industry best practices" based on solid scientific foundations.

e. Continuously strive to gain in-depth knowledge of your profession, as well as branch out to learn about intersecting fields, such as robotics and Mechatronics.

f. Traveling to our various sites to perform thorough assessments and gain in-depth operational feedback, approximately 25%-50% of the time.

g. Regular communication with Executive management regarding status, risks and operational program metrics.

Key job responsibilities

You are a trusted part of the technical leadership of an organization (typically at the Director level). As a key influencer in planning strategy, you bring business and industry context to data science and technology decisions. Influences science development and applications for the organization. Drives scientific methodology, innovation and delivery. Develops others. Takes a leadership role in the internal or external scientific community. Actively involved in organization wide engineering and strategic roadmaps. As a "hands-on" data science leader, you are accountable for significantly large projects, often in new territory, with quantifiable bottom-line impact. You drive experiments and rigorous analysis to innovatively answer design questions and evaluate process/products.

A day in the life

The activities more focused on strategic solution development for solving design problems. This starts with collaboration with both internal science(simulation, data analytics and SME), design and external product teams. You guide solutions for intrinsically hard problems, supporting expertise as needed. You decompose complex problems into straightforward component solutions. You propose projects that may require the work of several teams to implement;

About the team

The IDEAS team, which stands for Innovation, Digitization, Engineering, Analytics, and Simulation, focuses on providing cross-functional, collaborative support to design teams so they can provide reliable and efficient solutions. We are part of the World Wide Design Engineering team under the umbrella of Fulfillment Technology and Robotics (FTR) larger organization responsible for design solutions to majority Amazon fulfillment network. Members of the IDEAS team have expertise in engineering solutions based on science and math, with specializations in data analytics, material flow simulation, and Subject Matter Experts (SME) groups with experts in spacial computing, noise, process, controls and new technology validation.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 10+ years of tech industry or equivalent experience

- PhD in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, or any related quantitative field

- Experience working effectively with science, data processing, and software engineering teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience implementing models and tools through the use of high-level modeling languages (AMPL, Mosel, R, Matlab, Julia)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $170,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $294,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
