General Description:

Update, create and maintain process control systems. Troubleshoot hardware, software, and instrument problems. Create and implement new strategies to improve process safety and efficiency. Provide engineering support during start-up, shutdown and assist with unit troubleshooting.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, installs, commissions, updates and maintains regulatory process control systems
  • Responsible for design, maintenance and implementation of operator HMI and adherence to standards
  • Maintains and updates plant data historians
  • Provides Distributed Control Systems (DCS) Input/Output (I/O) assignments to I&E Engineer and Digital System Specialists
  • Supports Operator Training Simulators (OTS), ensuring DCS changes to the production environment are also incorporated into the simulator
  • Works with process engineers to continuously enhance the safety, reliability, and cost effectiveness of plant assets
  • Works with project and unit process engineers to ensure that control system modernizations, improvements, and modifications are incorporated smoothly onto the DCS
  • Works with personnel to support Aspentech RT-Opt, and OTS
  • Develops the business case for regulatory control, advanced control, optimization, and simulation technology applications
  • Develops conceptual design, reviews alternatives, and identifies benefits of control system projects
  • Generates process and process control enhancement ideas
  • Alarm Class Owner for Critical Fault Alarms
  • Participates in Alarm Rationalizations Sessions
  • Develops and implements alarm suppression and alarm state handlers.
  • Designs, implements, documents and maintains process safety critical BPCS control functions.
  • Provides input for the development of process control design standards and the tools required to implement those standards
  • With project engineers, determines costs and performs cost/benefit analysis for DCS modifications and control system modifications
  • Performs detailed process control system design
  • Updates documentation and provides all necessary training in a timely manner
  • Performs extensive project engineering functions for DCS modifications and advanced control projects, including MOC and project assurance activities
  • Participates in HAZOP studies
  • Participates in process safety reviews required for process control modifications
  • Assists with updating operating procedures
  • Works with I&E engineers to provide input to instrument and equipment selections
  • Provides technical assistance during startups and shutdowns
  • Performs special projects and miscellaneous duties as assigned


Physical Requirements:

Education, Experience, Certifications Required:

  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Previous experience in chemical manufacturing (or related industry)
  • Advanced PC skills
  • Advanced knowledge of distributed control systems and applications software
  • Advanced programming skills
  • Advanced knowledge of loop tuning principles and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of PLC programming and maintenance
  • Effective organizational and oral and written communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and with a team


Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications

  • Experience with Programming in R/Python, Machine Learning, Data Visualization, Big Data Processing
