Description:

The Process Control Engineer job is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing control systems that regulate production processes in pulp and paper mills. This role focuses on improving process efficiency, quality, and reliability by integrating automation, instrumentation, and control strategies. The engineer works closely with operations, maintenance, and technical teams to enhance productivity, reduce downtime, and maintain environmental and safety compliance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Control System Design & Implementation:
    • Develop, program, and maintain Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI).
    • Implement process automation strategies to optimize pulp and paper manufacturing processes, including pulping, bleaching, paper drying, and finishing.
    • Select and configure sensors, actuators, and field instruments for process monitoring and control.
  • Process Optimization & Troubleshooting:
    • Analyze process data to identify inefficiencies and implement control improvements.
    • Optimize steam, water, and chemical usage to enhance energy efficiency and reduce waste.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot control system issues to minimize production downtime.
  • Maintenance & Reliability:
    • Ensure control systems operate reliably through preventive and predictive maintenance.
    • Collaborate with maintenance teams to troubleshoot instrumentation and electrical issues.
    • Keep control system documentation, schematics, and software backups up to date.
  • Compliance & Safety:
    • Ensure control systems comply with industry regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA) and mill safety standards.
    • Implement control logic for safe operation, emergency shutdowns, and environmental compliance.
    • Work on cybersecurity strategies to protect control networks from external threats.
  • Project Management & Collaboration:
    • Participate in capital projects, system upgrades, and new technology implementations.
    • Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and IT teams for seamless process control integration.
    • Work with vendors and contractors to procure and install automation equipment.

  • Required Qualifications & Skills:
    • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related field.
    • Experience: 3-7 years in process control, automation, or instrumentation within the pulp and paper industry or a related manufacturing sector.
    • Technical Skills:
      • Expertise in DCS (Honeywell, ABB, Emerson, or Siemens) and PLC (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric).
      • Experience with industrial communication protocols (Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP).
      • Knowledge of P&ID diagrams, loop tuning, and control logic programming.
      • Familiarity with industrial safety systems and process safety management.
    • Soft Skills:
      • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
      • Excellent teamwork and communication abilities.
      • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with advanced process control (APC) techniques or machine learning for predictive maintenance.
    • Knowledge of pulping chemistry, steam management, and paper machine optimization.
    • Certifications in Control Systems Engineering (CSE) or ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP).
