What You Will Do

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security. Additionally, it is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.

Welcome to the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP) and the Plutonium Supply and Disposition (PSD) Division. The PSD Division is one of 10 divisions in ALDWP. The selected candidate will provide technical support as the process/system engineer in developing processes, improving processes, troubleshooting process, and supporting high-value manufacturing and will be responsible for supporting operations as needed to maintain equipment and ensure the operability of the process. Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure the implementation and compliance with Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, Quality, and Safety Management programs for their area.

R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)
  • Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Contributes to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Applies and interprets, on a broad basis, existing discipline-specific engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools to provide solutions for a wide assortment of complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of causal relationships which are difficult to establish.
  • Develops a technical approach and new methods or techniques, using creativity in applying standard practices and procedures, which lead to new or improved capabilities.
  • Assists in the development of technical products such as journal papers and reports, the development of intellectual property.
  • Sets direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget.
  • Actively participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy complex interactions, special assignments. May participate in external working groups and/or assist in organizing meetings, and colloquia.
  • Provides peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines.
  • Developing mentoring skills to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.
  • Maintains state-of-the-art technical expertise and knowledge within discipline and develops new skills in related disciplines. Attains additional certifications and/or qualifications to grow in field, which may include more advanced educational degrees and/or a professional engineer license.

R&D Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level.
  • Leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards.
  • Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts.
  • Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers,
  • Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions.
  • Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
  • Uses project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at the project or major task level.
  • Leads peer review of the work of others within his/her own organization and participates in peer review across organizations or disciplines.
  • Actively mentors and trains junior staff.
  • Develops and/or contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals. Acquires internal/external funding for self.
  • Contributes to developments in industry, and develops new skills consistent with state-of-the-art. May attain additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognition to grow in field.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Expertise
  • Experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical engineering; manufacturing engineering; machining engineering or other relevant fields.
  • Intermediate knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, analyzing, testing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience performing a broad range of complex engineering work, including experience designing or reviewing a complete project, system, or component.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing, system, and component testing operations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, codifying, and validating engineering requirements.

Analytical Skills
  • Intermediate analytical thinking skills, as demonstrated by experience designing and executing experiments or tests, including the analyzation and interpretation of data.
  • Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

DOE O. 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in various work environments
  • Demonstrated experience working in glovebox environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a nuclear facility.

Quality and Improvement
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, 712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
