Professional Development Specialist
Job Summary
The professional development specialist is charged with the development and delivery of professional learning as it pertains to the needs of the BOCES and participating school districts. This learning includes, but is not limited to, New York State standards and associated curricula, curriculum alignment, data analysis, formative and summative assessments, implementation strategies, classroom interventions, best practices, modern learning strategies, NYSED initiatives, and supporting the Seal of Civic Readiness as needed. Regular attendance and dependability are required. Other responsibilities may be assigned. The assignment is subject to change.
Qualifications Required
Candidate must possess a valid New York State Teaching Certificate and have 5 years of classroom teaching experience.
Qualifications Desired
Background in Social Studies
Background in Social Emotional Learning and/or English Language Learners
Previous experience in organizing and delivering professional development to groups of educators
Experience in teaching adult learners and facilitating groups
Knowledge and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion
Proven experience in curriculum development and assessments
Demonstrated experience in data analysis to inform instruction
Knowledge of and experience in implementing intervention strategies
Proven experience in curriculum alignment
Strong comprehension of 21st Century skills and learning tools
Possess excellent communication skills
Possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
Possess expertise on instructional technology
Possess a deep understanding of New York State Standards and the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework
Knowledge of the Seal of Civic Readiness
Responsibilities (Illustrative)
Consult with administrators, teachers and other client employees to determine current and anticipated professional development needs
Provide professional development to teachers to improve instruction
Collaborate with teachers to create and model lessons
Serve as a resource for curriculum and instruction by providing best practices and research-based strategies, including coaching to improve job performance
Conduct classroom observations to support teachers in implementing new strategies
Review and assist with data collection for completeness and accuracy to guide instruction
Maintain curriculum knowledge and train school staff as revisions are made to align to New York State Standards
Provide mandated certification workshops

Responsibilities (Illustrative)
Determine the most appropriate instructional method, utilizing knowledge of specified training needs and applicability and effectiveness of such methods as individual coaching, large and small group instruction, lectures, interactive training and transfer techniques
Select or develop appropriate training materials such as handouts, training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids and reference works
Market and encourage participation in upcoming staff development initiatives and activities
Schedule training sessions, develop registration procedures, ensure that the facility is setup, ensure that employees are notified and coordinate other practical elements involved with planning professional development activities
Serve as a resource to the Instructional Services department and component schools and advise/support instructional supervisors and principals with developing in-service programs
Assist with the leadership and coordination of the BOCES' curriculum council and major initiatives
Serve as a resource to teachers, administrators and other staff to identify and access professional literature, training materials and training opportunities
Oversee the maintenance of a database containing records of professional development initiatives
Work with and provide direction to clerical and other appropriate staff to complete assignments
Keep abreast of developments and research in the field of professional development, instructional best practices and organizational development
Create professional development opportunities
Support job-embedded staff development
Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by the administration
The position may involve significant travel to Albany and other BOCES across New York State to obtain current state and regional guidance and information
Perform other responsibilities as assigned
Ability to be responsive and flexible based on district needs/requests
Salary
$80,000-$90,000 Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
