Position Description
TARGET ENTRY SALARY: $99,204 - $109,124 DOQ
Under general direction, the Professional Surveyor & Mapper performs administrative, technical, and professional work planning, implementing, supervising, and reviewing the surveying activities related to engineering and construction for City properties and projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Plans, implements, and oversees field surveying activities associated with City property and projects.


    • Determines origin, purpose, scope and priority of field survey requests.


    • Coordinates workload distribution to effectively and efficiently optimize available resources.


    • Supervises and reviews City field survey crews and assesses contract services for adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.


    • Consults with City engineers, project coordinators, and other City department and external agency personnel to establish project objectives and monitor compliance with project timelines.


    • Researches, reviews, and analyzes legal descriptions, plats, surveys, atlases, and other records for appropriateness and determines the most accurate interpretation in accordance with established procedure and law.


    • Assists in preparing and maintain official City maps and atlases; assists Engineering CAD/GIS workload with other engineering work and Engineering CAD/GIS services with other City departments.


    • Prepares and maintains administrative information to account for project names, file numbers, field crew distribution, and project status.


    • Assists and advises field survey crews with resolution of difficult and complex matters.


    • Evaluates and procures general survey equipment and makes recommendations for planning, purchase, implementation, training, and optimal utilization of major technological systems.

    • Performs related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
State of Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper License is required.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Geomatics, Land Surveying, Engineering or a related field PLUS five (5) years experience in construction, surveying, and CAD and/or GIS technology, with some experience in a supervisory capacity; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • Land surveying principles, practices, and standards, and related laws and ordinances
  • Construction specifications and plans, and of the applicable regulations relating to public works projects
  • Principals and applications of GIS
  • Principles and practices of CAD for use in surveying, engineering, and GIS
  • Mathematics necessary to field surveying techniques, computations, and instrumentation
  • Civil engineering principles and terminology
  • General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment

Skill in -
  • Planning, coordinating, and supervising surveying projects and assigned staff
  • Reading, writing, and interpreting legal descriptions, reviewing and preparing plats and maps for recording.
  • Preparing and submitting clear and concise verbal reports and written summaries
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with city employees and departments and officials, consultants, contractors, and the general public
  • Dealing tactfully with the public
  • Operating a computer and related software
