Description:
Position Summary: Responsible for overseeing all day-to-day operations of a geriatric psychiatric unit. Ensures quality patient care that is in compliance with regulatory requirements, professional standards, and the facility's policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops, implements, and evaluates programs, policies, and procedures to ensure that the facility meets the needs of the patient population.
Ensures quality patient care that is in compliance with regulatory requirements, professional standards, facility policies and procedures and local, state, and federal law.
Coordinates the development of policies and procedures, clinical pathways.
Interprets the facility's policies, objectives, and goals to patients, staff, and the community.
Ensures recreation therapy activities meet the needs, interests, and capabilities of the patients/clients of the facility.
Coordinates the development of patient education materials.
Coordinates, reviews, and responds to patient care surveys.
Develops new behavioral health care programs to enhance patient care and to meet the goals of the facility.
Participates in problem solving policy forming conferences for behavioral health care services. Maintains close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of care.
Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of therapy.
Assists with the development and implementation of marketing plans for the community.
Educates the community through lectures. Holds information sessions with community groups and leaders.
Develops and maintains staffing strategies to ensure quality patient care and to meet the goals of the facility.
Develops and implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of patient care delivered to behavioral health patients, i.e., performance evaluations.
Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
In coordination with the management team, determines the developmental needs of the staff to ensure continued quality care.
Formulates the annual operating and capital budget for Clinical Services; monitors expenditures and revenues.
Directs the development and implementation of staff development, in-services, and orientation sessions.
Responsible for personal growth and development through continuing education, seminars, conferences, professional societies, and journals.
Ensures that all reports are completed in an accurate, timely, and informative manner.
Ability to provide nursing care appropriate to the condition of the geriatric patient.
Ability to perform nursing assessments on all patients and reassessments as per policy.
Performs thorough patient psychiatric interviews.
Demonstrates the ability to perform crisis intervention and triage.
Provides psychotherapeutic treatments to patients and families; individual psychotherapy, group therapy, family therapy, environmental manipulation, and educational classes.
Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
Formulates and implements patient treatment plans; family is included when appropriate.
Assures documentation meets current standards and policies.
Develops and implements staff recruitment and retention strategies to provide optimal patient care in the facility.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Requires a high school diploma or a GED state certification.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Masters preferred.
Requires 5 basic units of DCH education units per year.
Requires DCH mandatory annual training.
Ability to read, legibly write, and comprehend medical terminology, follow instructions, and perform simple mathematical calculations.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience needed.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in the behavioral health care setting
Ability to proficiently perform all essential job responsibilities after three-month orientation period. Annual completion of required educational programs, i.e. infection control, safety, disaster preparedness, hazardous materials, patient care equipment, CPR training, orientation-general and departmental (if new hire) and minimal continuing education requirements as defined by the Department of Education.
