The Property Accounting Manager will oversee a team of Property Accounting team members and ensure appropriate accounting functions and reporting of their assigned portfolios. This role will ensure that internal accounting standards and control processes are in line with American Campus Community goals and initiatives as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position will work closely with internal departments to include, but not limited to: Operations, Asset Management, Corporate Accounting, Tax, Financial Planning & Analysis, etc.

Critical Duties:
  • Supervise, mentor, and train a team of individuals which may include Staff Accountants, Property Accountants, Senior Property Accountants, General Ledger Accountants, Fixed Asset Accountants, etc.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with controls and departmental policies and procedures. Evaluate and suggest appropriate improvements as needed.
  • Review, coordinate and complete the preparation of accurate books and records for owned and third party managed properties within their portfolio and/or consolidated portfolio reconciliations.
  • Manage the consolidated portfolio reconciliations process to include, but not limited to: portfolio reconciliations, creating new reconciliation workbooks, creating reconciliation efficiencies across portfolios, etc.
  • Oversee and ensure the timely and accurate completion of property close folders to include, but not limited to: property financials, balance sheet reconciliations, etc. and consolidated portfolio reconciliations.
  • Perform review functions during end of month close to include, but not limited to: reviewing property financials, balance sheet reconciliations, consolidated portfolio reconciliations, etc.


Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned)
  • Work directly with other Property Accounting team leaders to allocate and prioritize team job functions and responsibilities.
  • Assist Financial Operations Team and other associated departments to include, but not limited to: Operations, Corporate Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, etc. with questions and information requests as needed and/or requested.
  • Manage special projects and initiatives as assigned and drive process changes for greater efficiencies.
  • Consult with Accounting department leadership on technical accounting matters to include, but not limited to accounting standards, principles, rules, etc.
  • Coordinate and complete audit requests as needed and/or requested.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate improvements of internal accounting and control processes, ensuring that practices are in line with overall goals of the organization and GAAP.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Carries out supervisor responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Coach, train and develop a team while managing the workflow and prioritization of projects and ensuring on-time execution and completion.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Qualifications

Education/Experience:
  • 5+ years related public accounting, and/or related professional experience required.
  • 2+ years professional management experience preferred.
  • Big 4 accounting firm experience preferred.
  • Experience with general ledger and fixed asset accounting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and/or Finance required.


Certificates/Licenses:
  • CPA preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. GAAP and a strong understanding of accounting processes.
  • Sarbanes Oxley.
