Wood is recruiting for a Protection & Controls Engineer to join its Power Solutions business focusing on protection, control, and metering system design for electrical substations. This opportunity is Hybrid and can be based in Oakville ON, Sarnia ON, Calgary AB, Edmonton AB, or Vancouver BC.

The Role
You will provide technical leadership and support to a team of engineers and designers to develop protection, control, and metering system designs for electrical substations ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV from conceptual stage through construction and commissioning. The role also includes conducting protection coordination studies, relay settings, engineering design reviews, and factory inspections, as well as supporting construction and commissioning activities.

Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership to engineers and designers for protection, control, and metering system designs for electrical substations
- Develop protection planning and application documents, one-lines, schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
- Perform protection coordination studies and relay settings for high-voltage transmission systems
- Review and prepare engineering drawings, specifications, construction plans, and testing procedures
- Support construction and commissioning activities, including outage planning and staging
- Conduct factory inspections and client technical review meetings
- Support Business Development by preparing proposals and estimates
- Liaise with clients on technical matters and participate in Safety by Design and constructability reviews
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of standards and practices
Qualifications

Expected
- Minimum 8 years of utility-specific protection, control, SCADA, and metering experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
- Ability to register as a Professional Engineer in Canada and/or the United States
- Experience in protection coordination studies and relay settings for high-voltage utility transmission systems
- Proficiency in relay setting software such as ASPEN, CAPE, EasyPower, SKM Power Tools, and programming software for SEL and GE relays
- Strong English written and verbal communication skills
Desirable: - Experience executing EPCM projects
- Field experience with outage planning, construction sequencing, and commissioning
- Familiarity with utility protection and control maintenance and operational practices
- Clean driving record/abstract
