Job Summary

The Public Service Counsel will work closely with the Firm's Pro Bono Partner and Public Service Committee to direct, coordinate, and expand the Firm's pro bono program across all U.S. offices. Crowell's pro bono program spans diverse areas, including landlord-tenant disputes, death penalty cases, civil rights, family law, government benefits (housing, veterans' services, social security disability), nonprofit corporate support, expungement, and impact litigation. The Public Service Counsel will devise innovative strategies to boost attorney engagement, forge partnerships, and ensure effective program administration while providing essential legal support. A deep commitment to pro bono services and the ability to inspire and lead are crucial for success in this position.

Job Responsibilities
  • Program Development and Oversight: Lead the growth and success of the Firm's pro bono program, implementing strategies to enhance attorney participation.
  • Partnership Building: Establish and maintain relationships with legal service providers and nonprofit organizations to foster pro bono collaborations.
  • Attorney Engagement: Conduct outreach to align attorney interests with pro bono opportunities and coordinate pro bono programming for associates.
  • Internal Promotion: Drive internal promotional efforts, including newsletters and events, to highlight pro bono achievements and opportunities.
  • Training and Development: Organize and lead orientation sessions, legal trainings, and clinics to enhance attorney skills and pro bono involvement.
  • Case Management: Oversee case intake, staffing, and progress monitoring to ensure efficient handling and resolution of pro bono matters.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Compile data on participation trends and prepare comprehensive reports on pro bono activities and metrics.
  • External Advocacy: Represent the Firm in access-to-justice initiatives and manage pro bono collaborations with billing clients.
  • Content Management: Contribute to the Firm's external website and marketing materials to promote pro bono efforts.
  • Substantive Legal Support: Serve as lead or supervising attorney on select cases, providing mentorship and guidance to junior attorneys.
  • Compliance and Administration: Ensure compliance with case opening procedures, manage budgets, and coordinate committee meetings.
  • Recognition and Surveys: Collaborate with the Marketing team on award nominations and respond to industry surveys and data requests.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong program management, organizational, analytical, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and client service skills, with the ability to engage diverse populations.
  • Working knowledge of immigration laws and policies.
  • Strong understanding of public interest law principles and practices, with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law.
  • Familiarity with legal ethics, risk management, and loss prevention strategies.
  • Strong data and project management skills.
  • Advanced technical proficiency in utilizing GenAI and other software platforms.
  • Ability to travel periodically to different U.S. offices as needed.

Education

The position requires a Juris Doctor and active bar membership.

Experience

The position requires a minimum of six years of legal experience, preferably in an Am Law 100 law firm with experience in the public interest legal services sector.

Our Firm is committed to fair and equitable compensation practice in accordance with applicable laws. The salary range for this position is $190,000 - $250,000. Additional compensation may include a discretionary bonus. Other benefits include healthcare, vision, dental, retirement, and all-purpose leave. The salary for this position may vary based on location, market data, an applicant's skills and prior experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other factors.
