Position Statement: Are you an experienced leader with a strong background in radiation protection and nuclear safety? The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking a Division Chief to lead and oversee the Division of Radiation Protection Services. In this position, you will have the opportunity to shape policies, regulations, and procedures related to radiation protection services, while working collaboratively with local, state, and federal agencies. You will be responsible for managing five critical sections, ensuring their performance aligns with program goals, and providing technical health physics support for decommissioning projects. As a subject matter expert, you'll lead radiological response actions and manage the state's radioactive material transportation programs. Essential Functions

  • Oversees the operations of the Division of Radiation Protection Services to ensure efficiency and accuracy among professional and technical Division staff involved with development of highly complex and specialized nuclear safety programs.
  • Serves as full line supervisor.
  • Reviews progress and activity reports of Division staff.
  • Directs the State's radioactive material transportation programs.
  • Serves as professional consultant to the Office of Nuclear Safety Deputy Director and other Agency personnel on complex nuclear safety matters pertaining to the areas of responsibility.
  • Travels to perform the duties of assigned team position in support of the Radiological Task Force by preparing for and responding to radiological incidents.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of a master's degree with coursework in nuclear engineering, health physics, radiochemistry, business or public administration, environmental sciences, or related fields.
  • Requires four (4) years of responsible professional experience in the field of nuclear or radiation safety (administrative experience is preferred).


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a life science or physical science, or engineering.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in developing radiation safety and health physics policy, regulations, and guidance.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience in a professional setting.
  • Four (4) years of professional working experience with the organization, functions, procedures, and compliance requirements of state and/or federal government as it relates to nuclear safety programs.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience with engineering principles and practices within radiation or nuclear systems, processes, and effects.


Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Requires ability to work in a 24 hour 'on call' capacity.
  • This position is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. This job may require a good deal of walking or standing or involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • Requires a criminal history check through the Illinois State Police.
