Duties:
  • Respond to Recreation Therapy Request for service in a timely fashion.
  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary care-planning.
  • Attend clinical meetings and family conferences as required.
  • Conduct individual leisure assessments, develop intervention plans and facilitate connections with community recreation programs/services upon discharge.
  • Plan, facilitate and evaluate recreation therapy programs/services for seniors who suffer from a mental illness (e.g. depression, bi-polar disorder, various types of dementia) which are client-centred and evidence-based.
  • Document client-centred outcomes and progress towards stated goals, in accordance with discipline and hospital policies.
  • Must complete RAI-MH training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MH system is required on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain work load measurement and data collection (i.e. RAI-MH) as required and input into the workload measurement system on a regular basis.
  • Contribute to furthering the goals of and to adhere to the Standards of Practice of the Discipline of Recreation Therapy at The Royal, including attendance at monthly discipline meetings and involvement in discipline-specific committees.
  • Other duties as assigned including program-specific committees.
  • Supervision of a University of Waterloo co-op work term student, in addition to other placement students and volunteers as required.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies or an Allied Health Degree with a post-grad Therapeutic Recreation diploma or certification will be considered.
  • Experience working with residents who suffer from a severe and persistent mental illness, with particular experience working with persons over the age of 65, suffering from dementia.
  • Knowledge of the impact of diagnosis on leisure functioning.
  • Ability to develop, plan and lead a variety of recreation therapy, leisure education and participation programs that are client-centered, evidence-based and outcome oriented.
  • Experience conducting leisure assessments, developing outcome-oriented intervention plans, delivering therapeutic programs, evaluating programs and services, documenting to reflect client-centered outcomes and progress, and facilitating links with the community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to provide quality therapeutic recreation services through the application of current therapeutic recreation best practices.
  • Membership with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario is an asset.
  • Proven ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Access to reliable vehicle and a Class F licence is an asset.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.

Salary Range: 45.45 to 54.10 per hour
