Job Description
Job Title: Registered Nurse - Med/Surg Telemetry
Job Specialty: Medical Surgical Unit
Job Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 7 AM - 7 PM, 12-Day Shifts
Guaranteed Hours: 48 hours per week
Experience: Minimum 1 year, previous charge experience highly preferred
License: Registered Nurse (RN)
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) preferred
- EKG Interpretation/Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred
Must-Have:
- Skills in reading/interpreting rhythm strips
- Proficiency in cardiac drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone), insulin drips, and heparin drips
- Must be comfortable with general medical-surgical skills
Job Description:
- Provide nursing care on a Medical Surgical Telemetry Unit.
- Monitor patients on telemetry with various medical diagnoses excluding primary cardiac issues.
- Common patient conditions include stroke, COPD, respiratory illnesses, flu/pneumonia/COVID, GI bleed, renal failure, electrolyte imbalance, altered mental status, weakness, and non-operable fractures.
- Work within patient ratios of Days 1:4-5; Nights 1:5-6, depending on patient acuity and support.
- Collaborate with CNAs, who are typically assigned Days 1:10; Nights 1:10.
- Engage in trach care, chest tube management, and general medical surgical skills such as wound care, IV antibiotic administration, drain/tube management, IV starts, and central line management.
- Participate in a supportive unit structure with available charge nurses, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, 24/7 house supervisor and respiratory therapist, and 24/7 hospitalist support.
- Utilize Cerner charting system and equipment such as Alaris and Pyxis.
- Be prepared to float to any area with Med/Tele patients within or below scope as needed.
- Attend 2 days of hospital orientation and one shift on the unit.
- Abide by scheduling requirements including every other weekend rotation and no holiday requests off are currently accepted.
