The Critical Care unit at the Grey Nuns Hospital is a fast-paced, dynamic unit with a welcoming interdisciplinary team who provide exemplary care to the critically ill patient. Critical Care at this site includes the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU). The Grey Nuns Hospital is also the Northern Alberta Vascular Centre which specializes in vascular surgery and the ICU provides support for these complex vascular patients that may require ICU post operatively. The Critical Care RN provides safe and competent care for patients using critical care knowledge and principles of family centered care. The nurse maintains a high degree of professionalism and works with the multidisciplinary team to determine patient needs and set priorities. Critical Care staff also function as part of the hospital-wide Rapid Response and Code Team.
Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity. The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.
Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required. Additional Required Qualifications:
Recent acute care nursing experience (Medicine/Surgery/Emergency) or a recent Critical Care preceptorship within the last year required. Strong interpersonal communication, stress management and conflict management skills. Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills. Excellent assessment, organizational and documentation skills. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to identify own learning needs, seek guidance in professional practice when deficits occur and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and development. Candidates without previous Adult ICU experience may be considered for the Orientation Program for Adult Critical Care in Alberta (OPACCA). OPACCA is a theoretical and practical training and orientation program. The candidate must achieve a grade of 75% or higher on theoretical component AND on the final examination to continue to the practical component. Successful completion of both components are required to be considered successful in OPACCA.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred candidates will have recent critical care experience and /or 3-5 years of medical/surgical experience, current ACLS and charge nurse experience.
