Job Duties

HWDMC is a 94-bed medical facility that provides acute medical diagnosis, skilled, intermediate and long term care to individuals receiving services in facilities operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, as well as individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities within the community. We have been awarded the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 5-Star Rating. Hiram W. Davis Medical Center is currently recruiting Registered Nurses to perform OR duties i.e. pre-surgical care, performs circulating duties, documentation of surgical procedures and reports, coordinates anesthesiologist schedules, maintains OR statistics and OR policies/procedures. Collaborates with medical, dental, anesthesiology, nursing, health information management, clinic and other facilities to ensure quality nursing care for all patients throughout the surgical process. Promotes teamwork and positive atmosphere using effective, assertive communication techniques. Maintains OR/RR, CMS and Medical Clinic according to CMS, Joint Commission and other regulatory agency standards. Employee Health Nurse responsible for monthly orientation, annual employee health clinics and all other duties assigned. Records management Assists in quality assurance activities and assures compliance with Agency, Departmental and accrediting Agencies policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Job Duties:
Prepares patients pre-surgery and follows hospital restraint policies and procedures
Conducts final check to ensure pre-op checklists are completed and documented.
Collaborate with community services to provide dental care to community and group home residents
Ensures patient has IV started according to MD orders.
If ordered by MD as needed by the patient, ensures patient has appropriate restraints for protection.
Prepares charts for surgical cases as scheduled under general anesthesia
Admit and discharge patients to the Pre-Operative and Post-Operative area.
Ensures OR team conducts and documents "time out" procedure.
Ensures clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety with medication storage and medication management.
Ensures that Employee Health (EH) medications are unexpired and stored according to policy in the refrigerator.
Maintain compliance with the EH refrigerator.
Completes monthly EH clinics during HWDMC orientation.
Completes annual EH clinics for the PPD and Influenza vaccinations in the month of October.
Prepares supplies and equipment to assist physicians and consultants during clinics including removing and applying splints and casts. Removes sutures and staples under physician's approval. Maintains the monthly crash carts located on the floors, clinic, OR and the audiology clinic (as stored there).
Patient Care:
Provides nursing care to clinic patients and communicates with them according to their needs, nursing policies and procedures and documents all care given. Monitors patients for reactions and reports promptly any change in patient's condition. Provides supervision to patients while in the clinic.

Minimum Qualifications

- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in State of Virginia.
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing coupled with demonstrated course work in continuing education.
- Proven experience in supervision and administration.

KSA's required to perform the job successfully:
Considerable knowledge of professional nursing, supervising and administrative principles and practices; knowledge of legal requirements affecting nursing practices. Considerable skill in advanced nursing procedures specifically in an operating room/recovery room, med-surgical, psychiatric or geriatric field. Demonstrated ability to work independently, to evaluate program and staff performance, to develop standards of care and operational procedures, to perform patient assessment, to troubleshoot problems and to establish priorities.

Additional Considerations

- Experience in nursing at the professional level coupled with experience in medical/surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, geriatric nursing, rehabilitative nursing and or nursing care of the intellectual disabled.
- BSN preferred
