This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, Education, Training and Research, 7901 Farrow Road, Columbia, SC 29203.

As the Registered Nurse working under the supervision of the Director of Education, Training and Research (ETR) you will plan, provide, and evaluate educational programs for the staff of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH). Programs include orientation of new employees, on-going staff education, and evaluation of staff competencies.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Implements and teach educational offerings/programs for nursing, clinical and support staff, to include New Employee Orientation, and enter the data into the SCEIS data base.
  • Conducts training on the Electronic Health Record used in the inpatient Services for all new nursing staff, teaching nursing staff how to navigate the system and write notes to meet regulatory and accrediting standards.
  • Designs, develops, and revises course content for new employee orientation, continuing education, and in-service to teach SCDMH employees to care for the patient population based on identified learning needs. This includes revision of the nursing curriculum and competency program to meet regulatory and accrediting standards.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational offerings/programs.
  • Conducts follow-up with newly hired nursing staff to help facilitate the resolution of any educational issues or concerns that they may express.
  • Designs and develops training programs for the Inpatient Services to meet special program needs.
  • Conducts orientation for student nurses who are affiliated with SCDMH and assists in recruiting efforts by providing insight and experience about being a nurse at SCDMH.
  • Consults with employees upon request, regarding clinical and/or administrative issues.

There are two (2) positions available.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Licensed as a registered nurse by the SC Board of Nursing.
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
Additional Comments

The selected candidate must have an and have extensive knowledge of nursing practices, including theories and techniques; ability to teach, structure programs, evaluate learning needs and competencies; ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing: ability to work independently; ability to maintain a therapeutic and professional relationship with patients and staff, ability to work therapeutically with age specific population; ability to work at times on all tours of duty when assigned; maintain current certification in Child/Infant/Adult CPR with AED, first aid and MAPS: ability to work within the Department and Nursing philosophies and mission. Be able to move freely around the facilities/campuses. Will be required to rotate between Inpatient Services and Long-Term Care to provide education and training to staff. Must be able to stand, walk, reach, pull, stoop, bend, push, climb stairs and be able to lift up to thirty (30) pounds. May be required to work occasional off shift or weekend.
