What we are looking for:

As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, you will become an integral member of the interprofessional team responsible for providing compassionate, patient and family centered care at Oak Valley Health, supporting the department as an Allied Health Lead.

What you bring to the role:

As a member of a dynamic diagnostic system, you will provide hospital-wide patient care to adult, neonatal and pediatric patients. Your proficiency and knowledge of therapy and the related technologies will enable you to carry out ventilation following ABG protocols and the initiation and monitoring of non-invasive ventilation. A progressive approach of integrating the respiratory therapist into clinical care on the inpatient units makes you a valuable member of the interprofessional team. You will also be a key member of the cardiac arrest, bronchoscopy, ERCP and high-risk delivery teams. The successful candidate will demonstrate a systematic approach to respiratory care including intubation, extubation, arterial line insertions, oxygen prescription and spirometry; rotations in the operating room will require special training and skill maintenance. MSH is a teaching site for Fanshaw College Respiratory Therapy program. The staff RRT will take an active role in the student education program including providing education and evaluation.

  • Provide input into equipment and products required for patient care

Staff Development
  • Participate in the development of profession specific competencies and participate in competency reviews
  • Liaise with other organizations/facilities/resources around best practice
  • Support staff development as student preceptors
  • Provide opportunities for staff to meet with profession-specific peers
  • Remain current on, evaluate, and make recommendations on changes, trends and new practices in the delivery of professional services
  • Establish mechanisms to support compliance with professional standards
  • Monitor, legislation, regulations and policies and procedures of professional bodies, and provide education on changes
  • Orient new staff to the professional practice expectations/guidelines for the profession within the organization
  • Support development and delivery of IP orientation
  • Facilitate preceptorship for new hires and/or existing staff
  • Actively pursue opportunities to further interprofessional collaboration
  • Support staff in problem solving and resolution of practice issues
  • Act as Consultant for other disciplines
  • Collaborate with operational leadership to evaluate skill mix and staffing compliment

Education
  • Educate all interprofessional groups about the scope of practice of the profession
  • Develop profession specific education plans
  • Create/deliver/facilitate opportunities for continuous learning and professional development for staff
  • Create opportunities/facilitate involvement of profession in Interprofessional Education
  • Establish collaborative relationship with educators to facilitate education
  • Ensure dissemination of practice related information
  • Advocate for student placements
  • Link with OVH education coordinator to establish placement quotas
  • Facilitate appropriate caseload assignment within organization
  • Coordinate student placements and orientation in consultation with Manager/Clinical Leader
  • Facilitate preceptorship
  • Facilitate/review feedback provided by students and new hires
  • Facilitate/develop learning opportunities for students - IP and profession specific

Practice
  • Provide support to enable members of the profession to work within their full scope of practice
  • Identify gaps that prevent/inhibit members from working within their full scope of practice
  • Work collaboratively with other professions to maximize scopes of practice within and across professions
  • Promote and support changes to scopes of practice
  • Identify changes in legislation, regulatory college standards and scope of practice that will impact profession specific practice
  • Facilitate compliance with legislation
  • Meet with professional staff as appropriate to support practice
  • Provide input related to professional standards against which performance is evaluated
  • Assist in monitoring staff adherence to professional standards and act as consultant when a performance/practice issue is identified
  • Support in development, monitoring and/or documentation of learning plan
  • Identify gaps in clinical documentation and provide education/support to promote quality documentation and adherence to standards
  • Liaise with managers regarding results of clinical documentation review
  • Participate in development and review/maintenance of documents guiding clinical practice (medical directives, pathways, CPGS, protocols, pre-printed orders), profession specific policies and procedures, and interprofessional policies and procedures
  • Develop and regularly review profession specific practice Policies &Procedures
  • Educate/support interpretation of profession practice Policies& Procedures
  • Monitor legislation, regulations and policy and procedures of professional bodies and educate management and staff on change

Workload measurement

As applicable to structure:
  • Review and establish caseload standards
  • Facilitate standardized approach across disciplines
  • Facilitate interpretation of profession specific data
  • Consult regarding utilization of data for program and strategic planning


Requirements include:
  • Current registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario and preferred membership to the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists and/or the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario
  • Minimum 1 year of RRT work experience in acute care
  • Preference given to applicants holding recent experience and demonstrated competency in ICU and ED and who have demonstrated the ability to assess the patients response to care, respond appropriately, problem solve and set priorities
  • Current BCLS, ACLS and NRP is mandatory; current PALS is preferred
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as a multidisciplinary team member in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Demonstrated good attendance record and performance record with the ability to maintain this same standard
  • Demonstrates a commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with organization related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required

Work Schedule:

Successful applicants should be available to work any shift, 7.5 and 11.25hrs, Days and Nights, weekdays, weekends and holidays.
