About the job:

BBVA SA has embarked on a growth plan to increase its Corporate and Investment Banking ("CIB") business in its non-EU geographies including the US. Therefore, the Regulation Desk aims to strengthen its coverage of regulation management in the non-EU countries in which BBVA has presence. The relevance of this in the US is the growth of CIB businesses and the vastness and complexity of US regulations. This has driven the need for a local representative for the CIB Regulation Desk.

Job Description:

The US CIB Regulation Desk role will be responsible for monitoring development of US financial regulations for impact on BBVA. She/he will have to assess and provide a view on:
  • The impact on CIB US business
  • Extraterritorial impact on the rest of CIB
  • Other aspects of specific interest to CIB or BBVA's Global Regulation Desk teams


She/he will also assist the CIB Regulation Desk team in explaining to US CIB the impact on CIB US businesses from other non-EU regulatory developments that have relevance.

The candidate for this role should have a general knowledge of:
  • Bank products, services and activities;
  • Broker/Dealer products, services and activities;
  • Swap Dealer and Securities Based Swap Dealer products, services and activities; and
  • The relevant US regulatory agencies (i.e., FRB, DFS, SEC, FINRA, CFTC, NFA) and regulatory regimes and relevant rules and regulations.


The type of regulation that must be monitored is very varied. It includes:
  • Capital markets: Transactions rules on securities and derivatives, market integrity, post-trade requirements (e.g. reporting and transparency)
  • Sustainable finance: Reporting, governance and risk management, ESG characteristics on products, transitions plans
  • Digital: Cyber security, third-party service providers, data, innovation
  • Conduct rules: Product governance, client protection
  • Anti-money laundering and terrorist financing, fraud and financial crime prevention
  • Prudential regulation and crisis management rules
  • Other specific requirements on the branch, BBVA Securities Inc. and for the Swap-Dealer, Securities Based Swap-Dealer licenses


The Regulation Desk:

The Regulation Desk performs the following activities:

Monitor regulatory developments:
  • Analyze the impact on CIB businesses
  • Inform CIB business, support areas and collect their views
  • Participate in industry associations working groups and committees
  • Defend CIB interest in front of industry associations, regulators and supervisors
  • Assist in the implementation of the necessary changes in the adaptation process to changing regulation

Assist in the interpretation of financial regulation

Provide training to personnel of CIB on financial regulation

In 2025, the team will have presence in Madrid, London, Mexico, New York and Hong Kong

Required profile:

For the Regulation Desk person in New York:
  • Be fluent in English, and have good writing and oral communication skills. Fluency in Spanish will be a plus;
  • Have an experience of no less than 10 years working in the financial sector;
  • Be proactive and have entrepreneurship to push initiatives that require collaboration with other areas of CIB both in the US and other geographies;
  • Strong collaborative skills and team player;
  • Is self-motivated and capable of operating independently:
  • Have capacity to analyze regulatory proposals and rules and assess their impact on BBVA; and
  • Have project management skills.

With respect to this position in our New York Office, the expected base salary ranges from $210,000 to $250,000. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
