Description

The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) owns and operates the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The Reliability Engineer will apply technical knowledge to deliver continuous improvement and asset reliability through the detection and elimination of operational issues.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following reflects SDSTA's definition of essential functions for this position and does not restrict other tasks that may be assigned. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Maintenance
  • Perform analysis and troubleshooting activities to eliminate problems to optimize equipment availability.
  • Develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track the performance of industrial and other infrastructure and utility related systems.
  • Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to plan, coordinate, and document inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Implement predictive/preventative maintenance measures.
  • Utilize engineering principles and develop root cause analysis for system issues.
  • Work with third-party vendors for support of inspections and maintenance as necessary.

Project Management
  • Review design drawings for new installations to ensure new equipment meets reliability specifications.
  • Work with engineering department on capital projects supporting operations and science infrastructure programs.
  • Assist in ensuring that new installations will meet technical requirements of project or experiment that they will be supporting.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement strategies.

Configuration Management
  • Work with all departments of SDSTA to develop process(es) to ensure the physical and functional characteristics of the SURF's assets are accurately documented and controlled.
  • Identify potential configuration items (CI) within the facility.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of the current configuration of each CI.
  • Ensure that any changes are implemented correctly such that the facility continues to function as intended.

Other Essential Functions
  • Maintains consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


Requirements

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or closely related field required.

Certifications and Licenses
  • N/A.

Experience
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience.
  • Solid knowledge in the application of reliability tools.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical / electrical systems.
  • Experience with maintenance planning with CMMS is desired.

Working Conditions

  • This position may require working in office, surface, and underground environments at depths up to 5000 feet, which may include exposure to extreme conditions, confined spaces, and varying temperatures.
  • Perform work in a typical office environment which includes individual workstations, shared workspaces, meeting rooms, and common areas such as a break room and kitchen.
  • The noise level is generally low to moderate in typical of an office setting and moderately loud when on the surface or underground, and may require hearing protection.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety Standards protocols are mandatory.

Salary Description

$82,900 - $99,300 - $121,400
