The School of Manufacturing Systems & Networks is searching for a research and development engineer. The successful candidate will perform independent research and development work in physical science in the technical areas of material processing and non-destructive evaluation (NDE), NDE-material process hardware integration, data acquisition, interpretation, and analysis.
Working Environment
Activities are performed in various laboratory settings; frequently required to stand and walk to other areas of the campus, and may require stooping, squatting, or moving in tight areas to maintain equipment; Appropriate attire for laboratory environment i.e. long pants, steel-toed shoes, safety goggles, etc. Additional activities in environmentally controlled office settings subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 65 pounds. Effective communication skills on the telephone, in email, in public and interpersonal settings with multiple ethnic and cultural groups. Valid Arizona Driver's License

Essential Duties
Under program PI direction, the R&D Engineer in MSN performs and manages their assigned technical tasks. The R&D Engineer has responsibilities in developing, prototyping, validating, and testing of novel sensing, metrology, NDT/E methods, and data analytics used for characterizing material processing techniques described in the DARPA program. The R&D Engineer will also be responsible for developing technical documentations including technical drawings, reporting, publishing, presenting the results in conferences and DOD review meetings, embedded firmware (where applicable) for operation and system integration with measurement and in- and ex-situ metrology characterization techniques.

Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge base as it relates to one or more of the following: nondestructive testing, sensing, ultrasound testing, acoustic emission, thermal imaging and testing, and validation, industrial robotics & automation equipment.
- Experience in managing and executing multiple research and development tasks within pre-defined scope and timeline.
- Experience in operating, maintaining, adjusting/modifying sensing hardware used in manufacturing process monitoring and metrology including but not limited to metal additive manufacturing, polymer extruder, ultrasonic welding, ultrasonic forming, metal extrusion.
- Experience in problem solving and decision making.
- Evidence of effective communication communication skills.
- Experience in working independently without supervision.

- Integrate sensing, NDT/E measurement systems including acoustic, eddy current testing, ultrasound, optical, thermal, laser and etc. into additive manufacturing and other manufacturing processes;
- Perform ex-situ material evaluation and testing using ultrasound testing for material evaluation;
- Develop and utilize advanced data-driven algorithm including but not limited to AI and ML for predication and classification of anomalies in the process and machine using the in-situ data ;
- Perform inspection of discrete material feedstock and document findings and observations;
- Work closely with the program PI to design and produce CAD models of a prototype material conversion system;
- Assemble, test, and operate the prototype system;
- Test, and validate the hypothesized material conversion process against required effectiveness and efficiency;
- Work closely with program PI and all other personnel to design process integration with in-line metrology and characterization;
- Document findings and produce relevant technical documentations for project reporting and research dissemination;
