Summary
The Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking an Instructor (MD) position to support faculty in advancing aortic disease research. This position will focus on designing and conducting studies to investigate the molecular mechanisms of aortic aneurysms and dissections (AAD), identifying key transcription factors and signaling pathways involved in vascular biology and aortic disease progression, and facilitating the translation of therapeutic targets into clinical research protocols.
Key responsibilities include grant writing, engaging with NIH officers, and collaborating with sponsors and partners to execute contracts and develop research protocols. The instructor will also play a vital role in supporting the Office of Surgical Research by identifying and submitting proposals for funding opportunities.
Additionally, this position involves manuscript preparation and the dissemination of research findings, with a primary focus on pancreatic cancer and related areas within pancreatic and oncologic surgery. The instructor will contribute significantly to both the academic and clinical research missions of the department.

Education required: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.). Previous research experience in molecular and cellular biology, animal model generation, grant writing, study design are preferred.

Job Duties
Under Dr. Shen's guidance, the instructor's key responsibilities will include:
- Study Design & Execution: Develop and implement research protocols for investigating aortic disease; Conduct molecular and cellular experiments and utilize animal models to study the progression and therapeutic targeting of aortic disease; Supervise research staff and trainees in maintaining quality control, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Scientific Communication & Dissemination: Preparing and submitting abstracts and manuscripts for publication; Disseminating research findings at local, national, and international conferences; Develop progress reports for funding agencies and research sponsors.
- Grant Writing & Research Funding: Identify relevant funding opportunities from NIH, private foundations, and industry partners; Prepare and submit grant proposals, including drafting research aims, experimental approaches, and budget justifications.
- Academic Collaborations: Establishing and strengthening collaborations to advance translational research and bridge basic and clinical research efforts.
- Regulatory & Compliance Management: Prepare and coordinate protocols for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval in line with regulatory standards.
- Training & Mentorship: Train and supervise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting researchers in experimental techniques and data analysis; Conduct workshops and seminars to enhance lab members' research skills.
Minimum Qualifications
Education required: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.). Previous research experience in molecular and cellular biology, animal model generation, grant writing, study design are preferred.
